Bit of an odd one this, but I've been mulling it over since someone on another forum raised something similar.

Running a single 450W panel into a 48V LFP system — what's the sensible controller choice here?

The maths isn't terrible. Most 450W panels I've seen lately sit around 40-42V Voc, which means the charge voltage headroom into a 48V bank is... tight. You'd want to check your controller can actually boost adequately rather than just pass-through. Some cheaper units get a bit confused at these ratios.

On my static van I've got a Renogy Rover handling a smaller 24V setup and it's been solid enough, but I wouldn't push it into territory it wasn't designed for. For a 48V system specifically, the controller choice really does matter more than people think.

Non-Victron options I'd actually consider:

  • EPever Tracer AN series — reasonably well documented, decent community support
  • SRNE — used one briefly, seemed capable, not as pretty as Victron obviously
  • Renogy Rover Elite — though check the 48V specs carefully before ordering

The 100:20 sizing in the thread title is presumably 100V input / 20A output? If so, at 48V you're looking at roughly 960W theoretical max, so one 450W panel is well within range — the question is whether the controller handles the lower current at that voltage cleanly.

Anyone actually running a single high-wattage panel into a 48V bank without Victron kit? Curious whether people have had balancing or tail-current issues specifically.

@RetiredEngineer72 Honestly for a single 450W panel into 48V LFP, a 100/20 is fine on paper — your typical 450W panel will sit around 41-42Voc, well within the 100V input limit. Current-wise you're looking at roughly 10-11A at peak, so the 20A rating gives you decent headroom.

That said, I'd gently push back on whether a 100/20 is the right choice long-term. If you're even half-thinking about adding a second panel later, you'll outgrow it quickly on the current side. A 100/30 costs very little extra and saves you the bother of upgrading.

What's the panel's actual Voc and Isc from the datasheet? Worth double-checking before committing — manufacturers vary more than you'd expect on 450W specs.

The maths on this is pretty straightforward. A 450W panel into 48V gives you roughly 9-10A at peak — so a 100/20 is genuinely adequate right now, but you're leaving expansion headroom completely on the table.

I'd seriously look at the Victron 100/30 instead — marginal cost difference, and if you ever parallelise a second panel (very common on narrowboats once you realise you want more), you're not binning the controller.

Worth double-checking your panel's Voc against the controller's 100V input limit too — some 450W panels push 48-50V Voc, which gives almost zero thermal headroom. Cold winter mornings will spike that voltage higher than the datasheet nominal suggests.

If budget's tight, a Renogy Wanderer 40A handles the current side fine, but Victron's comms integration with a BMS is genuinely worth the premium on LFP.

Curious question for you @RetiredEngineer72 — are you planning to add more panels later? The reason I ask is that on my van build I went slightly oversized with a Victron 100/20 partly for headroom to bolt on a second panel down the line without replacing the controller. Seemed daft to save £30 now and pay full price again in a year.

What's your battery capacity? With a single 450W panel into 48V the charge current will be modest anyway — does that factor into how quickly you need to top up?

Something nobody's mentioned yet — the future-proofing angle. I made exactly this mistake on my narrowboat build, buying a controller perfectly sized for my initial array. Six months later I'd added another panel and was back shopping again.

If there's even a 10% chance you'll expand, a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 sits in a lovely sweet spot — handles your single 450W comfortably now, leaves genuine headroom for a second panel later, and the Bluetooth monitoring alone is worth the modest price premium over cheaper alternatives.

The 100/20 isn't wrong exactly, but you're cutting it closer than you might think on a warm day when Voc climbs. @ExSquaddie49's maths will bear that out.

On my narrowboat I ran a 100/20 with a single 370W for two years before expanding — oversizing the controller slightly is never wasted money, but a 100/20 for one 450W panel at 48V is genuinely overkill since you're barely tickling 10A anyway.

A Victron 75/15 or 100/15 covers you perfectly for that single panel, costs less, and runs cooler. If @BorderCamper's expansion question is where this is heading though, grab the Victron SmartSolar 100/30 — future panels can be added without touching the controller, and the Bluetooth monitoring is worth every penny on its own.

Don't let anyone sell you a 100/20 just because the wattage sounds close — do the actual current maths as @ExSquaddie49 suggests.
