My shepherd's hut runs on a pair of Fogstar Drift 12V 100Ah cells and honestly the plastic casing is either the hero or the villain depending on the day — it's survived being sat on by a sheep and a full British winter, so I'll give it that.

The cases on the cheaper units you find on Amazon are proper lottery territory though — had one arrive cracked straight out of the box, which is a fun way to start a Monday.

Few things I've learnt living with these in a tiny space:

  • Heat expansion is real — don't box them in too tight or the casing will bulge and your BMS will have a meltdown (sometimes literally)
  • The terminal covers are basically decorative on most budget units
  • Victron-compatible units tend to have slightly beefier casings in my experience, probably because they're not cutting corners to hit a price point

Anyone running the Renogy 24V lithium in a confined space? Curious whether the casing holds up better than the 12V equivalent — I'm eyeing an upgrade and my hut has approximately the structural integrity of a damp cardboard box, so I need something that won't mind the occasional wobble.

Also — does anyone actually trust those IP ratings printed on the side? Asking for a friend whose batteries got slightly rained on during installation.

Quick question though — are you running those two Drift 100Ahs in series for 24V or parallel for a beefier 12V bank? I'm curious because I'm weighing up whether to go Fogstar for my EV charging setup and the casing robustness genuinely matters for how I'm planning to mount them.

Also, does the plastic casing affect heat dissipation at all when you're pushing decent charge/discharge rates? I'd imagine a shepherd's hut environment can get pretty wild temperature-wise — freezing overnight then baking in the afternoon sun.

Have you had any warping or stress marks on the casing, or is it holding up solidly? Would really help me understand whether they're worth it over something in a metal enclosure.

@ValleyChild the sheep test is genuinely more rigorous than most lab certifications, I'd wager.

Running a very similar setup in my shepherd's hut — two Fogstar Drift 12V 100Ah units and the plastic casing has held up through some properly brutal Scottish winters. What I will say is that thermal expansion is worth watching; I noticed one case developing a very slight bow after a summer where it sat in direct sun through the hut's south-facing window. Nothing catastrophic, but I wedged some timber battens along the sides as a precaution and haven't seen any progression since.

For emergency backup purposes the plastic casing actually suits me — it's lighter to relocate than steel-cased alternatives if I need to move power around the site. The trade-off in rigidity feels acceptable given the weight saving.

@ValleyChild the Fogstar Drift cases are surprisingly tough — I've got two in my static caravan and they've taken some knocks during setup that would've cracked lesser housings.

One thing worth knowing: that plastic does flex slightly in temperature extremes. Nothing alarming, but worth making sure your mounting straps aren't overtightened or you'll stress the case over winter. Left mine with just enough give and had zero issues.

Also if you're paralleling those 100Ah units, double-check the bus bar connection points don't put lateral pressure on the terminals — the case can't redistribute load the way a steel enclosure might. Small foam pad between the batteries helps keep everything stable in a hut that moves around seasonally.

@ValleyChild I run three Fogstar Drift 100Ah in my shepherds hut setup — same cells. The case material is ABS with a reasonable wall thickness, but the weak point isn't the sides, it's the terminal cover clips. Two of mine have snapped off after repeated connection/disconnection cycles. Functionally irrelevant but annoying.

Worth noting: if you're ever stacking these horizontally, the lid flex under load is non-trivial. I've shimmed mine with 18mm ply offcuts between the stack and the shelf above to distribute the clamping force.

The sheep incident is probably fine structurally — dynamic point load from a hoof is actually less damaging than sustained compression across the lid centre. Physics, not luck.
