Been down this rabbit hole myself actually — ended up doing something similar for the static caravan and a small cabin on the same plot, wanted cameras covering the gate and both structures without running mains anywhere near the boundary fence.

Ended up going with a small Victron 75/15 MPPT feeding a single 12V AGM (100Ah, nothing fancy, Renogy unit I had spare), then running a fused distribution block to four PoE cameras and a cheap TP-Link EAP access point. The PoE injectors were the tricky bit — they draw more than people expect at startup, especially in cold weather when the battery's not at full capacity.

Few things worth thinking about if you're planning this:

  • Fuse each camera run individually — a short on one feed shouldn't kill the whole system
  • PoE injectors vs a PoE switch — a proper PoE switch is more efficient and simpler to manage than four separate injectors
  • Night vision draws more — IR LEDs spike the current, easy to underestimate on your load calculations
  • Access point placement — mine ended up needing a short ethernet run rather than being co-located with the battery, which meant weatherproofing the junction properly

The bit I'm still not fully happy with is winter performance — shorter days up here, cameras running all night with IR on, and the battery doesn't always recover fully day-to-day in December. Thinking about adding a second panel but space is tight on the cabin roof.

Anyone running lithium (Fogstar or similar) for this kind of always-on low-drain setup? Wondering if the better usable capacity justifies the cost over AGM for something this small.

@VanRhys similar setup on my boat — gate cam plus a couple covering the deck.

Key things I'd flag:

  • PoE cameras eat more than you'd think at idle, check the actual draw not the rated max
  • I run mine through a Victron SmartSolar so I can see exactly what the cams are pulling via the app
  • Fogstar cells if you're building a battery — decent price for the capacity

One thing worth doing is putting cameras on a timer relay overnight if you're not bothered about 24hr recording. Cut my overnight drain massively. NVR only needs to spin up when motion triggers anyway.

What cameras did you end up going with? Some of the cheaper Hikvision clones are surprisingly low draw.

@JasonMoore interesting you mention PoE on a boat — that's actually what's got me curious about this whole thread. Running PoE off 12v on a narrowboat means you're going through a DC-AC inverter just to power the PoE switch, then back to DC at the camera end, which seems wasteful.

Has anyone tried 12v PoE injectors instead? I've seen a few on Amazon but not sure about reliability for permanent outdoor installs. Wondering if there's a decent branded option worth the extra spend.

Also on the solar side — what sort of panel wattage are people finding sufficient? I'd imagine cameras on standby with occasional motion-triggered recording isn't huge draw, but factor in a cloudy Welsh winter and I'd want proper headroom.

@JasonMoore @Taffy — boat angle is interesting and exactly where I'd push back on PoE slightly. Salt air and RJ45 connectors are not friends long-term; I've had corrosion issues on my own boat setup that I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Worth considering 12V native IP cameras (Reolink do several) running directly off your battery bank via a proper Victron SmartSolar controlled system. Eliminates the PoE injector as a potential failure point entirely.

Key things I'd add that haven't been covered:

  • Voltage drop over long cable runs kills camera reliability — go up a wire gauge
  • A small LiFePO4 buffer battery (Fogstar do decent 12V options) keeps the system stable overnight or during poor weather
  • Make sure your NVR has a wide input voltage range — some are fussy below 12.5V

@LakelandNomad fair point on the salt air — hadn't even thought about that for boat installs.

For my shepherd's hut I went WiFi cams in the end, purely because running cable through the insulation was a nightmare I didn't fancy. Reolink on 12v direct, dead simple. Only thing I'd say is placement matters a lot — if the camera's too far from the router you'll lose connection randomly and spend ages wondering if it's the solar not delivering or just signal drop.

Ended up putting a small WiFi extender in the hut powered off the same Victron setup. Sorted it.
