Had something similar crop up on my narrowboat setup last autumn — Multiplus II 24v/3000 throwing low battery warnings even though my Fogstar Drift 200Ah cells were reading fine at the terminals.

The 18.5v at the lugs is the telling detail here. On a 24v system that's properly alarming — you're well below the threshold where the Multiplus will start complaining, and honestly below where you want LiFePO4 sitting for any length of time.

Few things worth checking in roughly this order:

  • BMS cutoff — if you're running lithium, has the BMS tripped internally? The battery can appear connected but be effectively open circuit
  • Cable voltage drop — measure at the battery terminals directly, not just the Multiplus lugs. A dodgy connection or undersized cable can cause a significant discrepancy under load
  • VEConfigure / VictronConnect — pull the actual DC input voltage reading from the unit itself rather than relying on a multimeter at the lugs. Sometimes tells a different story
  • Shore power charger profile — worth double-checking your charging profile is actually set for lithium if that's what you're running. A lead-acid profile on LiFePO4 can leave cells genuinely low

The shore power not making any difference is interesting. Suggests to me the Multiplus may have gone into a protection state and isn't accepting charge, or the BMS has disconnected the charge path entirely.

What battery chemistry are you running and is there anything between the battery and the inverter — isolator, fuse, bus bars? That'd help narrow it down.

@PanelEwan classic Victron gaslighting — check your DC cable sizing because a voltage drop across undersized wire will make the Multiplus think the batteries are having an existential crisis even when they're absolutely fine at the terminals.

Mine did exactly this in the garden office setup until I swapped to proper 70mm² cable and suddenly the phantom low battery alerts vanished like they'd never existed.

Also worth double-checking your low battery voltage threshold in VE.Configure — the factory default can be a bit dramatic for LiFePO4 chemistry compared to what Fogstar cells actually need.

@VoltBarry is on the right track but there's another culprit worth ruling out first — the battery sense wires.

The Multiplus II has dedicated B+ and B- sense terminals. If yours are connected to the busbar rather than directly at the battery terminals, you'll get a false low reading under load because you're measuring after any connection resistance, not at the actual cell terminals.

On my narrowboat I had exactly this — cells reading 25.8V at the terminals but the Multiplus was seeing 25.1V and throwing fits. Moved the sense wires directly to the Fogstar terminal lugs and the problem vanished.

Also worth checking: what's your low battery shutdown voltage set to in VEConfigure? Factory default on 24V units is often conservatively high. Should be around 22V for LiFePO4, not the lead-acid default.

@DevonDweller and @VoltBarry have both nailed the most likely culprits, so I'll add what caught me out on my motorhome build last winter.

Check your low battery shutdown voltage setting in VEConfig — the Multiplus II ships with fairly conservative defaults and on a 24v system the "low battery" trip point can sit higher than you'd expect for LiFePO4. My Fogstar cells were perfectly healthy but the inverter was comparing terminal voltage against a threshold tuned for lead-acid behaviour.

Also worth looking at: DC ripple under load. Fire up something hefty — a kettle or inverter-driven drill — and watch the voltage in real time via the VRM portal or a Bluetooth BMV. A momentary dip during heavy draw can trigger the alert even if resting voltage looks fine.

VEConfig is free, takes ten minutes, and usually solves it.

@MarinePhil good shout on whatever you were about to say there — I'll add my own experience from the tiny house install.

Something nobody's mentioned yet: the MultiPlus II's low battery threshold settings in VEConfig. Mine was throwing identical fits until I connected via MK3-USB and found the previous owner had left the low battery cutoff embarrassingly high — nearly 23.5v on a 24v system. A fully loaded inverter would brush that ceiling under any real draw.

Worth five minutes with VEConfig before you start pulling cable runs apart. Check:

  • DC input low shut-down voltage
  • DC input low restart voltage

The Victron defaults are sensible but someone may have tweaked yours. Fogstar Drift cells are perfectly capable — I'd put money on this being a config issue before a hardware one.
