300-600w inverter with hard wired outputs?

Been running a similar setup in my van for about two years now — 12v leisure battery topped up via a Victron Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger whilst driving, feeding a small inverter for the occasional kettle or laptop when parked up.

The bit nobody talks about enough is hardwired outputs on smaller inverters in this wattage range. Most 300-600w units just give you standard 13A sockets, which is fine until you want a clean, permanent install without a plug flapping about behind your dashboard.

A few worth looking at if you're after hardwired terminals at this size:

  • Victron Phoenix 375VA / 500VA — terminals on the output, proper build quality, integrates nicely with the rest of the Victron ecosystem
  • Giandel 600w — cheaper option, some models have a hardwired terminal block alongside the sockets
  • Renogy 700w — slightly over your range but worth considering if you anticipate any load creep

The real question is whether you're inverting occasionally (laptop, phone charging, small tools) or running something continuously — because that changes whether you want pure sine wave or if modified sine will do the job without melting your wallet.

My Victron Phoenix hasn't missed a beat, but it cost more than my first car (slight exaggeration).

Anyone else gone down the hardwired route at this wattage? Curious whether people are fusing at the inverter output terminals or relying solely on the upstream DC protection — feels like a thread that needs a proper UK perspective rather than the usual American truck-build content floating about.

@TID_Electric — the Victron Phoenix 375VA is worth a hard look here. I ran one on the shepherd's hut build for about eight months before upgrading, and the hardwired AC output terminals are genuinely solid. No faffing with sockets, just clean cable entries straight into a consumer unit.

The beauty of staying in the Victron ecosystem is the VE.Direct monitoring — you can watch exactly what your Orion-Tr is feeding in versus what the Phoenix is pushing out. Useful for spotting where your losses are hiding.

One thing worth knowing: at that wattage range you're right on the edge of what a kettle demands at startup. Factor in surge figures, not just continuous ratings, before you commit.

Really interested in this thread as I've been down a similar rabbit hole recently. One thing worth considering alongside the Phoenix that @ExFirefighter11 mentions — have you looked at the Victron Phoenix 500VA? Slightly more headroom for those brief startup surges and still remarkably compact.

The hardwired outputs question is the key bit though. Most inverters in this range don't have built-in hardwired AC terminals as standard, but it's genuinely straightforward to wire a small consumer unit directly onto the AC output. I used a 2-way Wylex unit on mine — keeps everything tidy, properly fused, and means you're not relying on the inverter's own socket. Dead simple and looks far more professional than a trailing lead rattling around.

Just make sure your DC cabling to the inverter is suitably rated and kept short — voltage drop at 12v will catch you out otherwise.

@TID_Electric one thing nobody's mentioned yet — if you're going hardwired outputs on something in that 300–600W bracket, pay close attention to the inverter's idle/no-load draw. On a 12V leisure setup that's constantly connected, even 0.5–1A parasitic draw will quietly murder your battery overnight.

I've got a Victron Phoenix 500VA hardwired into my Transit conversion and the ECO mode cuts idle draw right down to almost nothing — it polls the output every few seconds looking for a load then spins up properly when it detects one. Slight caveat: some sensitive electronics don't like the polling pulse, so worth testing your specific loads.

Also worth specifying whether your hardwired outputs need to be unswitched live or controlled — makes a significant difference to which units are even viable without modification.

@ExBrickie31 raises a good point about hardwired outputs — worth adding that if you're going down that route, you'll want to check whether the inverter's output terminals are rated for the cable sizes you actually need. I've seen a few cheaper units where the terminal block is physically too small to accept 2.5mm² flex properly, which is a nightmare when you're trying to do things right.

On the unit itself — the Victron Phoenix range does have proper hardwired AC output terminals as standard, which is part of why it commands the premium. The Giandel and Renogy units in that wattage bracket are more fiddly in that regard.

Also worth confirming: is this a 12v or 24v system? Efficiency differences at the lower end of that wattage range can be surprisingly significant depending on your base voltage.
