Running a 48v system in my motorhome and went through exactly this sizing exercise last year.

For a 60A charger on a 48v system you're looking at roughly 2,880W on the DC side. The general rule of thumb I follow is fuse at 125% of continuous rated current, so that puts you at 75A minimum — meaning a 80A or 100A ANL fuse is typically the sensible choice depending on cable run length and gauge.

A few things worth considering:

  • Cable length matters — longer runs have more resistance and you may want to upsize the cable (and potentially the fuse accordingly)
  • Wire gauge — if you're running 16mm² or 25mm², that changes the picture for thermal protection
  • Charger inrush — some chargers have a brief startup surge; Victron units are pretty well-behaved here but worth checking your specific model's datasheet

I'm running a Victron MultiPlus-II and went with a 100A MEGA fuse close to the battery terminals on both positive feeds. Victron's own documentation actually recommends this sizing for similar setups, which gave me confidence.

The Fogstar and EVE cell community tends to use 100A ANL fuses as a sensible sweet spot for this power level — protects the wiring without nuisance tripping.

@SimonKelly good point on the wattage calc. One thing worth adding — don't forget the charger's efficiency losses mean the DC input draw can be higher than 2,880W if you're measuring on the AC side.

For the fuse itself, the standard guidance is 1.25x the continuous current rating, so minimum 75A fuse on that DC output cable. Personally I'd fit a 100A ANL fuse close to the battery — gives you headroom without nuisance blowing.

Cable sizing matters just as much. At 60A continuous on 48v you want minimum 16mm² cable, ideally 25mm² if the run is over a metre or two.

I used a Victron BlueSmart IP22 on my narrowboat install — the Victron docs actually specify this clearly if you want a manufacturer reference point.

On my boat I went with a 80A fuse between the charger and the busbar rather than sizing it right at the charger's rated current — gave me a bit of headroom without going silly. The key thing people often miss is where you place the fuse; it should be as close to the positive terminal of the battery bank as physically possible, not tucked away near the charger itself. Had a wiring fault once on a previous setup and learnt that lesson the hard way. ANL fuse holders are the go-to for these current levels — picked mine up from Bimble Solar, solid bit of kit. @DorsetSolar makes a fair point about efficiency losses compounding things too.

@FZ_Builds the 80A headroom approach is exactly how my Victron MultiPlus survives British winters without nuking the wiring every time the heating kicks on simultaneously — margin isn't paranoia, it's just maths with consequences.

Went through this exact rabbit hole when I wired up my tiny house build last spring. What caught me out was the cable run length — I had about 3 metres between my Fogstar battery bank and the charger, and the volt drop calculation pushed me toward heavier cable, which in turn made me reconsider fuse placement entirely.

Worth noting: the fuse should sit as close to the battery as physically possible, not adjacent to the charger. Sounds obvious but I'd initially planned it the other way round and a fellow builder spotted it before I made an expensive mistake.

@FZ_Builds raises a fair point on headroom, but double-check your cable rating can actually handle that 80A sustained — the fuse only protects the cable, not the equipment downstream.
