Just went through this exact rigmarole last summer — added a Fogstar Drift 10kWh to my existing setup and honestly it's transformed things, though the install was less "weekend project" and more "three weeks of mild existential dread."
Few things worth chucking into the conversation:
- Inverter compatibility is where people come unstuck first — your existing inverter might not play nice with lithium without a firmware update or full swap. Victron stuff tends to just work, which is why half this forum owns shares in them (probably).
- BMS communication — don't skip this. Running a battery dumb with no comms to your inverter is asking for a bad time, especially if you're doing any EV charging off the back of it like I do with my van.
- Battery placement — I've got mine in a shepherd's hut so thermal management is fun. Lithium below about 5°C won't charge properly and nobody tells you that in the brochure.
The ROI question is the one that'll do your head in. Pencil it out properly with current export/import rates because the numbers shift depending on whether you're on Octopus Agile or something more boring.
What inverter are you currently running, and are you grid-tied or off-grid? Makes a massive difference to what route makes sense — someone coming from a Growatt setup has a completely different headache to a full Victron MultiPlus job.
