Just went through this exact rigmarole last summer — added a Fogstar Drift 10kWh to my existing setup and honestly it's transformed things, though the install was less "weekend project" and more "three weeks of mild existential dread."

Few things worth chucking into the conversation:

  • Inverter compatibility is where people come unstuck first — your existing inverter might not play nice with lithium without a firmware update or full swap. Victron stuff tends to just work, which is why half this forum owns shares in them (probably).
  • BMS communication — don't skip this. Running a battery dumb with no comms to your inverter is asking for a bad time, especially if you're doing any EV charging off the back of it like I do with my van.
  • Battery placement — I've got mine in a shepherd's hut so thermal management is fun. Lithium below about 5°C won't charge properly and nobody tells you that in the brochure.

The ROI question is the one that'll do your head in. Pencil it out properly with current export/import rates because the numbers shift depending on whether you're on Octopus Agile or something more boring.

What inverter are you currently running, and are you grid-tied or off-grid? Makes a massive difference to what route makes sense — someone coming from a Growatt setup has a completely different headache to a full Victron MultiPlus job.

Genuinely loads of collective knowledge on here about this — what's your current system spec?

@SamFrost — the "weekend project" underestimation is real. Mine stretched to nearly three weeks once I factored in the G99 notification to the DNO, re-routing DC cabling to meet the 1.5m voltage drop limit, and getting the Victron Cerbo GX communicating properly with the BMS over CANbus.

One thing worth flagging that catches people out: if you're on an export tariff (SEG or Octopus Flux, etc.), adding storage can trigger a re-assessment of your export limit. Worth a call to your DNO before commissioning, not after.

The Fogstar Drift's integrated BMS is decent but I'd still recommend setting charge voltage limits conservatively in VE.Configure — manufacturer's upper limit isn't always the sensible daily limit for longevity.

@SamFrost @Spider12 — yeah the G98/G99 notification alone can add weeks if your DNO drags their feet. Factor that in from day one or you'll be sitting on a fully wired system you can't switch on.

One thing worth checking before you commit to any battery — your existing inverter. Loads of people buy the battery then discover their inverter won't communicate with it properly. Victron kit plays nicely with most things but if you've got a cheaper hybrid already in place, check compatibility first.

Also don't overlook the Fogstar Drift's discharge rate limits at low temps. Fine for most UK installs but if your gear's in an uninsulated garage it's worth knowing about before winter hits.

Great points from @SamFrost and @Wez1961 — and worth adding that beyond the DNO notification delays, you'll want to think carefully about where you're actually siting the battery unit itself. The Fogstar Drift and similar LiFePO4 units have operating temperature ranges that can catch people out — a draughty garage or uninsulated outbuilding in a British winter can push you outside safe charging temps. I made the mistake of mounting mine in an unheated utility room and had the BMS cutting out on cold nights until I sorted some basic insulation around it. Also make sure your installer is familiar with the specific inverter compatibility requirements — not all hybrid inverters play nicely with every battery out of the box and the firmware updates needed can add unexpected faff. Happy to share what worked for me if anyone's at that stage!

That's where I'd focus attention honestly. When I bolted a Fogstar onto my existing setup the inverter situation was the real headache. A lot of older hybrid inverters either won't communicate properly with third-party batteries or need firmware updates that aren't exactly well-documented.

Worth checking whether your inverter supports CAN bus or RS485 communication with the battery BMS before buying anything. Some combinations just don't play nicely together regardless of what the spec sheets claim.

Victron kit tends to be the safest bet for compatibility — pricey, but the ecosystem actually works as advertised. If you're retrofitting rather than starting fresh, that matters more than people realise until they're three hours into a config rabbit hole at 11pm on a Sunday.
