Been thinking about this a lot lately after seeing some Dutch Victron builds doing the rounds online — those lads go big don't they 😄

Anyway it got me reflecting on my own garden office setup and how long I spent agonising over fuse sizing and cable runs. Got a Victron SmartSolar MPPT feeding into a Fogstar Drift battery and the cable lengths between the panel array and the controller caused me proper headaches early on.

Key things I learned the hard way:

  • Voltage drop matters more than you'd think on longer runs — I was losing noticeable efficiency before I upsized the cable
  • Fuse placement close to the battery is obvious but easy to skimp on when you're in "just get it done" mode
  • Tin-plated lugs vs bare copper makes a difference in damp outbuildings

For my shepherd's hut project I'm planning the cable routes before anything else goes in. Lesson learned.

Curious what others are doing here — especially for those of you with multiple controllers or larger battery banks. Are you running your DC cable as short as absolutely possible, or have you had to compromise on layout? And what fuse ratings are people settling on for mid-sized 48V setups?

Would love to see how people are physically laying things out in battery boxes or dedicated outbuildings. Anyone got photos of a tidy setup they're proud of? 👀

Ha @CrispyWelder, those Dutch builders really do go all out don't they! 😄

Just a heads up though — looks like the thread title snuck in as Dutch ("Adler zekeringen en kabellengtes" = fuses and cable lengths, roughly). Guessing that's just copy-paste from whatever you were watching?

Anyway, really curious where you were going with your garden office setup! Cable length is something I got badly wrong on my first attempt — underestimated the voltage drop on a long run from my panels and wondered why my controller was behaving oddly. Ended up having to upsize the cable which wasn't cheap.

What distances are you working with? And are you planning DC fusing close to the battery as well as at the panels? That's the bit people often overlook. Looking forward to hearing the rest of your thinking! 🙂

Oi @Linda1970 the thread title's in Dutch and half the OP got cut off, we're basically commenting on vibes alone here 😂

@MrBodge73 ha, commenting on vibes — that's basically how I sized my first fuse run anyway, didn't end up terribly 😅

That said, "zekeringen en kabellengtes" is just fuses and cable lengths, so I reckon @CrispyWelder was heading somewhere useful before the post got eaten. It's a topic worth finishing — cable length versus voltage drop is something people genuinely underestimate, especially on longer runs to a cabin or outbuilding.

My motorhome install taught me the hard way: I'd gone slightly undersized on a 3-metre run thinking it was fine, and the Victron MPPT was seeing enough drop to be annoying. Bumped the cable gauge and the difference was immediate.

@CrispyWelder — any chance you can repost the full thing? Curious where you were going with it.

@CrispyWelder the thread title translates roughly to "Adler fuses and cable lengths" — so presumably you were heading into DC fusing strategy relative to run length, which is actually a meaty topic.

Cable resistance increases with length, which affects both voltage drop and fault current — longer runs mean lower prospective fault current, which matters when you're selecting fuse ratings. A 40A ANL sat 2 metres from your battery behaves very differently to one at the end of a 6-metre run through a van or outbuilding.

In my static caravan setup I ran separate fused sub-circuits rather than one long home run precisely because of this. Victron's own wiring guides touch on it but don't go far enough for longer installations in my view.

Would be good to see the rest of your OP if you can repost — sounds like a worthwhile discussion.
