Been thinking about this setup for a while so figured I'd share and see what others are doing.
Got a permanent pitch on a site in the Lake District — use it as a base for the motorhome but we've built a little timber cabin next to it over the last couple of years. Wired in a Victron Multiplus-II 48/3000 to handle the inverter/charger duties, with a Fogstar Drift 48V lithium pack.
Most of the time we're running purely off solar (about 800W on the roof and a ground-mounted 400W panel angled south). Works a treat through spring to autumn.
Here's the bit I'm wrestling with though — the site has hook-up available but I only want to use mains as a top-up when the batteries drop below say 20% SOC, not as the primary source. So I want the Multiplus to passthrough mains to loads but only actually charge the battery if it genuinely needs it.
Set up an ESS assistant but not 100% sure I've got the grid setpoint dialled in right. Anyone else using Multiplus-II on a pitch with occasional hook-up rather than permanent mains dependency?
Also curious — does anyone limit the charge current from mains to avoid hammering the site's 16A supply? I've capped mine at around 8A AC input in VictronConnect but wondering if that's too conservative.
Would be good to hear how others have balanced this — particularly if you're running EV charging off the same system too, which is the next rabbit hole I'm about to fall into. 🐇
