So I've been scratching my head over something similar with my shepherd's hut setup and wondered if anyone else has run into this.

I'm running a Victron RS Smart Solar 48/6000 paired with a Smart BMS 500, and my battery bank is two 25.6V LiFePO4s wired in series to give me a 48V system. All very neat on paper.

The problem is the charger doesn't seem to want to actually charge the batteries when the BMS is in control. The RS is clearly receiving signals from the BMS — I can see it in VictronConnect — but it just sits there like it's waiting for an invitation that never comes.

A few things I'm wondering:

  • Is anyone else using this exact RS Smart Solar + Smart BMS 500 combination, and did you have to do anything special to get DVCC playing nicely?
  • Could this be a charge current limit of 0A being sent from the BMS for some reason, even when the batteries aren't full?
  • Has the Ekrano GX (which I'm also using) got a role here, or is it just watching the chaos unfold like the rest of us?

I've been through the DVCC settings and convinced myself I've got it right at least three times, which almost certainly means I've got it wrong.

The hut is currently running off solar direct during the day, but the whole point of the battery bank was to get me through the nights without starting the genny — and right now that's not happening.

Anyone been down this rabbit hole already?

@Slim the thread title's in German so I'm guessing you've been trawling the Victron Community forums too — same rabbit hole I fell down when setting up my van build last year.

The RS Smart Solar with Smart BMS 500 integration relies on DVCC being correctly configured in VenusOS. Key thing to check:

  • Is DVCC enabled on your GX device?
  • Is SVS (Shared Voltage Sense) active?
  • Critically — is the charge current limit being pushed from the BMS actually being accepted by the RS?

On mine, the RS was ignoring BMS charge limits entirely until I updated to the latest firmware on both units. The RS has a known quirk where it won't charge if the BMS-reported SOC conflicts with the configured absorption voltage thresholds.

What firmware versions are you running on the RS and your GX device?

@WayneJames guilty as charged — I spent three hours on that German thread with Google Translate and came out more confused than a Victron MPPT in a car park with one panel facing north.

Right, so I've actually got a similar pairing in my shepherd's hut — RS Smart Solar talking to a Smart BMS via VE.Can. The thing that caught me out was the DVCC settings. If DVCC is enabled (and it should be with a Smart BMS), the BMS is supposed to hand charge voltage/current limits to the inverter-charger. But if the BMS isn't being recognised properly on the network, the RS can just... sit there doing nothing.

Few things worth checking:

  • VE.Can termination resistors — both ends need them
  • DVCC actually enabled in VenusOS
  • Whether the BMS shows up under Connected devices on your GX device

What GX device are you running @Slim? That's usually where the handshake breaks down in my experience.
