AliExpress Sep deal 4x100w solar panel$147 12V 150ah battery $146

Seen a few of these pop up lately and honestly the panels might be worth a punt — 400W for that price is tempting, especially if you're in the early stages of a build and just want something on the roof while you figure out your proper setup. Panel quality from AliExpress has genuinely improved over the last couple of years, and worst case you're out a manageable sum.

The battery is where I'd pump the brakes though. A 150Ah listed as 12V at that price almost certainly means one of two things: it's a lead-acid AGM dressed up in a fancy box, or it's LiFePO4 cells that are either heavily cycled A-grade rejects or genuinely underspecced. Neither is necessarily a disaster depending on your use case, but for a van build you really need to know your actual usable capacity and cycle life before committing.

For context, my current setup runs Fogstar Drift 100Ah cells wired in parallel — yes, more expensive upfront, but I know exactly what I'm getting in terms of BMS protection, cycle count, and thermal behaviour. That matters when you're living in the van and your heating, fridge, and lighting all depend on it.

If anyone does pull the trigger on that AliExpress battery, I'd strongly recommend getting a capacity tester on it before integrating it properly. Throw it on a load and measure actual Ah delivered — you might be surprised how far off the nameplate figure it is.

Would be genuinely curious whether anyone here has done a proper teardown on one of these. What cells are inside? What's the BMS rated to?

@Lefty28 the panels might be okay — cheap cells with dodgy tolerances are annoying but rarely dangerous.

The battery though, steer well clear. A 150Ah "12V" battery from Ali for £115ish is almost certainly:

• Misrepresented capacity (real-world probably 60-80Ah)
• No proper BMS
• Possibly second-life cells rebadged

Done a narrowboat build and a van — both times I went Fogstar Drift for budget LiFePO4 and it was night and day vs the cheap stuff. Still affordable, actually delivers rated capacity, and you've got someone in the UK to shout at if it goes wrong.

400W of questionable panels losing 15% efficiency is annoying. A dodgy battery catching fire in a confined space is a different conversation entirely.

@OakSpirit is right to split those two out — they're totally different risks.

That battery is a hard no from me. 150ah 12V for £115-ish? The maths just doesn't work. Either it's a fraction of the stated capacity or it's some sketchy LFP knock-off with no BMS worth trusting. Possibly both.

Had a mate run one of these in his van. Claimed 150ah, actually measured around 60-70ah real-world. Fine until it wasn't — thermal event, wrecked the whole setup.

Spend the extra and get a Fogstar Drift or similar. At least you know what you're actually getting and it won't torch your caravan.

Panels are a different conversation tbh.

Been running a small setup in my shepherd's hut for a couple of years now. Went Fogstar Drift for the lithium and honestly couldn't be happier. Costs more upfront but you actually know what you're getting — proper BMS, UK support if something goes wrong.

The panels side I'm less bothered about. Worst case with dodgy tolerances you're just getting less watts than advertised. Not ideal but survivable.

The battery though — thermal runaway in a small wooden structure like mine doesn't bear thinking about. No brand transparency, no real spec sheet, no thanks.

If budget's tight, keep an eye on Fogstar's refurb/sale listings. Seen some decent deals on there that aren't much more than that AliExpress price.

Genuine question for the thread actually: has anyone successfully tested one of these mystery batteries with a proper capacity tester? Curious whether they even hit 50% of the claimed spec or just immediately burst into something resembling a small bonfire.

For what it's worth I went Fogstar Drift for my hut build — not the cheapest but at least I know what I'm getting and there's an actual returns process if it dies on me in January when I'm trying to run a tiny heater.

The panels I'm genuinely less bothered about — worst case they underperform and you add another one. Worst case on a dodgy LiFePO4 is somewhat more dramatic. 🔥

@StormyWelder @HeatherGazer I've got a shepherd's hut setup too — went with a Daly BMS on my Fogstar cells and honestly it's been rock solid for about 18 months now. Dead easy to configure via the app.

On the original thread — panels are probably fine, I've seen worse come through reputable UK suppliers tbh. Battery's the gamble. A dodgy BMS in an enclosed timber structure isn't worth saving £80 over. Just buy Fogstar Drift or similar and sleep properly.
