Anyone else had the "all LEDs doing a Christmas tree impression" situation on a Multiplus?

Happened to me last year mid-config — dodgy USB-to-MK3 cable I reckon, lost connection right in the middle of a firmware flash. Absolute heart-sink moment.

Ended up not being bricked though. Few things worth trying before you panic:

  • Hold the rocker switch in the middle (charger only) position for a few seconds on boot
  • Try the VE.Config recovery mode — connect MK3 interface, open VE.Configure, sometimes it'll detect a unit stuck in bootloader and let you reflash
  • If you're on VictronConnect via VE.Direct instead, swap to a known-good cable — cheap knockoffs cause more grief than they're worth

The MK3-USB cable quality genuinely matters. I binned two dodgy third-party ones before getting an official Victron interface and everything was solid after that.

Worth checking Victron Community forum too — there's a specific thread about recovery mode that saved my unit. Victron support are actually decent if you raise a ticket, especially if it's a genuine firmware corruption rather than config error.

What model Multiplus is it? II or the older one? And what were you configuring when it went sideways — ESS settings?

Curious whether anyone else has managed a full recovery from what looked like a proper brick. Feels like these things are hardier than they look, mine came back fine.

@GrumpyWanderer been there, done that, bought the therapy sessions — nine times out of ten it's that cursed cable and not a brick.

Few things that saved my narrowboat install:

  • Grab a known-good USB-to-MK3 cable (the cheap knockoffs are basically firmware assassins)
  • Hold the rocker switch for a proper hard reset before panicking
  • Reconnect in VictronConnect via Bluetooth first — sometimes she just needs a cuddle before accepting USB again

If you can still see it over Bluetooth it's almost certainly recoverable. The full LED disco usually just means it's stuck mid-flash waiting for someone to finish the job it started.

Mine came back from what looked like certain death — now running a 3kVA Multiplus happily charging the van off solar without so much as a flicker.

@GrumpyWanderer the "Victron Christmas tree" is a rite of passage it seems 🎄

Worth knowing: if the all-LEDs-flashing state persists after a full power cycle (disconnect AC and DC, wait a proper 30 seconds for the caps to drain), you can often recover it by forcing VE.Config into "detect interface" mode before attempting another firmware push.

Also — and I cannot stress this enough — always run VEFlash directly from the PC, not via a USB hub. Learned that one the hard way when my garden office install decided to become a very expensive paperweight mid-update.

If it's genuinely stuck in bootloader hell, Victron's "Bootloader recovery" procedure is documented on their community forum — search "Multiplus recovery mode" — it involves holding the rocker switch during power-on. Saved mine completely.

@GrumpyWanderer had this exact situation on my shepherd's hut build — genuinely thought I'd killed a brand new Multiplus 12/3000.

What actually saved it: holding the rocker switch on the unit itself for a few seconds forces it into a known state before you attempt another flash. Then only use the genuine MK3-USB interface, not the knock-off you'll find on certain well-known auction sites.

VE.Configure will usually reconnect fine once you've done that. The firmware recovery via VictronConnect on Android is also worth knowing about if you're really stuck — it's more tolerant of mid-transfer failures than the desktop software in my experience.

Main thing: it almost certainly isn't bricked. Victron's bootloader is reasonably robust. I'd be skeptical of anyone telling you to send it back at this stage.

@GrumpyWanderer had this on my narrowboat Multiplus-II last winter. Bricked mid-firmware update, not even a config change — just a dodgy laptop going to sleep at the wrong moment.

Recovery mode saved it. Hold the rocker switch in a specific sequence on boot — can't remember the exact steps off the top of my head but it's on the Victron community forum, search "Multiplus recovery mode" and you'll find it.

One thing nobody mentions: do it from a proper desktop or a laptop with sleep mode disabled. MK3 interface is fussier than it looks. I use VictronConnect on a dedicated old netbook now, nothing else running.

Hasn't happened since. Touch wood.

Been there myself with this one! @GrumpyWanderer the good news is it's almost certainly recoverable. What saved me was using the MK3-USB interface directly rather than faffing about with VE.Config — connect it up, fire up VEFlash, and let it force a fresh firmware onto the unit. The Multiplus bootloader typically survives even a badly interrupted flash, which is what gives you the fighting chance.

One thing worth double-checking: make sure your laptop isn't running on battery during the flash process. Power management kicking in mid-write is another classic culprit alongside dodgy cables. Plug the laptop in, disable sleep/hibernation temporarily, and go again.

@ExPostie @BurnWalker glad you both got sorted — these units are surprisingly resilient underneath that dramatic light show! 😄
