Am I first person to install SmartShunt without recording PUK code?

Probably not the first, and definitely won't be the last! 😅

So I fitted my Victron SmartShunt to the battery bank in my shepherd's hut build a few weeks back — tucked it away nicely behind the battery box, feeling very pleased with myself. Went to set everything up in the VictronConnect app and... yeah. PUK code. Never heard of it, never written it down, and the unit was now completely inaccessible without essentially dismantling half the installation.

For anyone who hasn't hit this yet — the PUK code is printed on a sticker on the SmartShunt itself. Once it's buried behind batteries, cable runs, and whatever else you've crammed in there, good luck reading it.

A few things I've since learned the hard way:

  • Photograph every sticker on every piece of kit before you install it
  • The serial number alone isn't enough — Victron support need the PUK specifically
  • Apparently you can sometimes get it retrieved via Victron's support team if you can prove purchase, but it's a faff

Managed to sort mine in the end by contacting Victron directly with my invoice from Bimble Solar — took a few days but they came through.

Curious whether others have run into this, particularly on boats or vans where access is even more of a nightmare once everything's battened down. Is there a standard "pre-install checklist" anyone uses? I'm building a proper one now after this little episode. Would be worth pinning something in this forum for new members before they make the same mistake.

@SunnyTinker Ha, you're absolutely not alone there! I did exactly the same thing on my first install — had the box in hand, glanced at the PUK sticker, thought "I'll note that down later" and promptly never did. 🤦

Worth knowing though — if you ever need to reset the PIN, Victron's support are actually quite helpful if you can prove purchase (receipt or retailer confirmation). They can sometimes work with you on it.

Also, a tip for anyone reading this later: photograph everything before it goes behind a panel. Battery labels, serial numbers, PUK codes — just a quick phone snap into a dedicated album. Saved me multiple headaches on subsequent builds. Obvious in hindsight, but shepherd's hut installs especially seem to involve cramming things into awkward spots never to be seen again! 😄

Done exactly the same thing during my hut build — shunt wedged behind the battery bank, PUK code facing the wall, naturally. The VictronConnect app will prompt you for it if you ever need to change protected settings like the battery capacity or charged voltage threshold. Day-to-day monitoring works fine without it.

Worth noting: the PUK is printed on the unit itself, so if you can physically access it (even with a torch and a mirror in my case), you can retrieve it. Victron support can also assist with proof of purchase if it's genuinely inaccessible.

Going forward, I now photograph everything before it goes into an enclosure — label, serial, PUK, the lot — straight into a dedicated folder on my phone. Learned that lesson the hard way with my MPPT too.

Classic install-first-read-manual-never situation! 😄

Worth knowing — the PUK code is actually printed on a sticker on the SmartShunt itself, so if you can physically access the unit you might be able to read it directly off the device rather than hunting through packaging. Might save you dismantling the whole install, @SunnyTinker.

That said, in my experience the PUK only becomes relevant if you've locked yourself out of the Bluetooth PIN — for day-to-day use via VictronConnect you'll likely never need it. Victron's support team are also pretty decent if you're genuinely stuck; they can sometimes help verify ownership and sort things from their end.

Document everything on future installs though — serial numbers, PUK codes, the lot. Lesson learned the easy way for once! 👍

To be pedantic about this (and I will be): the PUK code on the SmartShunt is printed on the label on the unit itself, not just in the packaging. So if you can physically access the shunt, you can read it directly off the device. No code is "lost" unless you've somehow obscured the label during installation.

That said, I made exactly this mistake on my hut build — mounted it in a position where reading the label meant partially disassembling the cable routing. Lesson learned: photograph every label on every piece of kit before it goes in. Battery serial numbers, SmartShunt PUK, MPPT serial — all of it. Takes 30 seconds and saves considerable grief later.

Victron Connect generally handles pairing without the PUK anyway unless you're dealing with a PIN-locked device somebody else configured.

Mine's behind a panel in the van that requires removing approximately 47 screws, a sacrificial offering, and a PhD to access — the PUK code is definitely still on the sticker.
