Been watching this thread with interest because I went down a similar rabbit hole last year when I was speccing out the electrical system on my narrowboat conversion.

Ended up going Victron Multiplus in the end — the price difference felt brutal at the time but three seasons in with zero grief, I'm not crying about it anymore. That said, I completely understand the appeal of these Chinese units when you're trying to keep a build budget under control. Not everyone has £1,200+ to drop on an inverter/charger.

The split-phase 120V side is interesting for anyone running American appliances, but on a UK build that's a fairly niche requirement. What's the actual use case here — are you running imported kit, or is this going somewhere stateside?

My concerns with the Ampinvt units (and I'd say this about most of the budget inverter/charger crowd) would be:

  • Surge handling — does it actually deliver that 5kW surge or does it fold under load?
  • Charger behaviour — is the absorption/float cycle configurable or is it a fixed dumb profile?
  • Transfer switch speed — critical if you've got sensitive electronics

Anyone run one of these alongside a proper battery monitor? Would love to see real consumption figures rather than the spec sheet nonsense. If you've got a Victron BMV or a Fogstar battery with built-in BMS comms, some comparative data would be genuinely useful for the thread.

Don't let me put you off sharing the review though — budget kit that actually works deserves proper documentation. The community needs honest accounts, not just Victron worship from people like me.

Great shout on the Victron Multiplus, @WezFisher. Hard to argue with that choice for a narrowboat - the integration with CCGX/Cerbo and the whole Venus OS ecosystem is genuinely brilliant once you've got it dialled in.

Curious though - did you need the split phase capability at all for the narrowboat, or was single phase sufficient for your setup? I'd imagine most UK narrow boat appliances are standard 230v single phase, so the split phase on this Ampinvt unit seems a bit redundant for most of us this side of the pond unless you're specifically running North American equipment.

The Ampinvt pricing is certainly tempting on paper, but I keep coming back to Victron's support network and the sheer number of experienced installers who know the kit inside out. Sometimes paying more upfront saves a lot of head-scratching later.

Victron on a narrowboat is basically cheating — that CCGX integration with the engine alternator via a Wakespeed regulator is proper black magic when it all talks together nicely.

That said, if budget's tight, the Ampinvt units are genuinely interesting for static shepherd's hut or van builds where you're not dealing with marine corrosion or the complexity of shore power plus alternator plus solar all needing to play nicely simultaneously — my motorhome Victron setup cost more than some people's entire vans, which still stings a bit.

For a narrowboat though? Stick with @WezFisher's choice — Canal & River Trust marinas can be fussy about what's connected to their shore power bollards, and having a CE-marked Victron with proper documentation saves arguments with harbour masters at 7am.

Worth noting this thread is specifically about the Ampinvt split-phase unit though — 240/120v AC output is a fairly niche requirement for most UK builds unless you're running North American appliances or have specific equipment that demands it.

For my motorhome I went Victron too, but the split-phase question never came up. Curious what the OP's actual use case is for the 120v leg — that's the part I'd want to understand before drawing comparisons with a Multiplus setup.

Anyone actually running one of these Ampinvt units long-term? The price point is tempting but I'd want to see real-world data on the charger side efficiency and how it handles generator input before considering it for the cabin build I'm planning.

@SamBennett is right — split-phase is pretty niche over here. The Ampinvt units are aimed squarely at the North American market where 120/240v split-phase is standard domestic supply.

For UK/EU use you'd almost never need that. Our single-phase 230v setup is sorted by something like a Victron Multiplus-II or even a cheaper Renogy inverter-charger depending on budget.

The only real UK use case I can think of for split-phase is if you're running imported American appliances — some RVers bring over US kit. For my garden office build I just went standard 230v and it's dead simple.

If the OP is actually based in the US this unit might make sense, but for anyone here reading along — don't get drawn in by the wattage figures, the voltage spec makes it largely irrelevant for British installs.

@CE_Builds makes a fair point about the North American market focus, but I've actually seen a handful of UK vanlifers importing these specifically to run American appliances they've brought over — think RV-spec air conditioning units and the like. Bit of an edge case admittedly.

One thing worth flagging if anyone does go down this route: you'll want to double-check your consumer unit setup carefully. Running split-phase alongside standard 230v UK shore power hookup isn't straightforward and could catch people out if they're not confident with the wiring. Definitely one for a qualified electrician rather than a weekend job.

Has the OP done any testing on the charger side of the unit? Specifically curious about the charge curve behaviour and whether it plays nicely with lithium banks or if it needs fiddling with the settings.
