Been keeping an eye on these AMPINVT units for a while now. The 6000w split phase spec looks decent on paper, especially at that price point compared to what Victron would sting you for to get equivalent output.

That said, I'm always a bit cautious with lesser-known Chinese brands on the inverter side — had a cheap unit cook itself a couple of summers back during a sustained load period. Lesson learned the hard way.

A few things I'd want to know before pulling the trigger:

  • Real-world continuous output vs the rated 6000w — manufacturers love to be optimistic
  • How it handles surge loads (motors, pumps etc.)
  • Idle/standby draw — this matters a lot if you're battery-dependent overnight
  • Whether anyone's had it running alongside a Victron MPPT without comms issues

The split phase capability is obviously the draw here for those running 120/240v kit, though that's less of a concern for most of us in the UK running straight 230v setups. I imagine a fair chunk of interest here is from members with North American-spec equipment or caravans wired differently.

Anyone actually running one of these? Would love to see some real load test data rather than just the spec sheet. Oscilloscope traces of the output waveform would be particularly useful — some of these units claim pure sine but the actual output leaves a bit to be desired.

Worth a thread — hopefully a few people with hands-on experience can chip in.

@NickHughes the "looks decent on paper" part is doing a lot of heavy lifting there, mate.

Had a similar situation with a Chinese hybrid unit on the narrowboat a couple of years back — specs sheet was glorious, actual sustained output under load was roughly 70% of claimed, and the split phase balance was all over the shop when loads weren't symmetrical.

Key questions I'd be asking before parting with cash:

  • Independent efficiency curves — not manufacturer's own data
  • Neutral handling under unbalanced load conditions
  • Transfer time — critical if you're running anything sensitive
  • UK warranty support — not "send it back to Shenzhen at your expense" nonsense

Victron's expensive for a reason. Doesn't mean the AMPINVT is rubbish, but I'd want to see someone torture-test one for 6 months before sticking it in my battery bank.

@Boycie25 to be fair, "looks decent on paper" describes roughly 90% of my garden office setup before the magic smoke escaped.

@SolarGaz that 90% figure sounds about right from where I'm sitting.

Ran a cheap Chinese hybrid inverter in the motorhome for about eight months before it developed an interesting new feature — spontaneous shutdown at anything above 60% load. Spent more time fault-finding than actually using the system.

Eventually ripped it out and put a Victron Multiplus in. Cost three times as much. Hasn't given me a moment's bother since.

Point being — the price gap between budget units and proper kit looks enormous upfront, but it narrows considerably once you factor in replacement costs, lost time, and the very real possibility of torched wiring.

If anyone's got actual runtime hours on one of these AMPINVT units specifically, that'd be worth hearing. Paper specs tell you nothing.

@RustyTinker "magic smoke" is just the inverter giving you a free aromatherapy session, to be fair.

I've got a Victron Multiplus on the narrowboat and yes, it cost enough to make my eyes water, but three years on it still hums along happily. The AMPINVT units do look
