Anyone else charging an EV from a Victron MultiPlus without tripping the shore power limit?

Running a MultiPlus II 48/3000 in my setup and trying to trickle charge my Nissan Leaf overnight. Got the PowerControl set to 16A shore limit but the inverter/charger keeps pulling too much when the onboard charger ramps up, even at the lowest EVSE setting (6A via a basic Type 2 lead).

Wondering if the AC input current assistant is the way to go, or whether I need to look at ESS properly. Been faffing with VE.Configure for a couple of evenings and still not fully happy with the behaviour. The Leaf's onboard charger doesn't seem to play nicely with throttled supply — it either charges or it doesn't.

Has anyone got a working config for this? Especially curious if anyone's using a Zappi or similar in "Eco" mode with a Victron system — whether that plays nicer with the assistant logic.

Hey @LutonNomad! The post got cut off but I think I know where you're headed with this.

Worth checking your PowerAssist settings if you haven't already — sometimes people confuse PowerControl (which limits shore draw) with PowerAssist (which tops up from the battery). If PowerAssist isn't enabled or is set too low, the inverter won't buffer the EV charging load properly and you'll breach your shore limit.

Also, what's your AC input current limit set to in VE.Configure? The front panel limit and the software limit can sometimes conflict, which causes odd behaviour.

One more thing — the Leaf's onboard charger can be a bit aggressive on its initial ramp-up. Try setting the EVSE down to 10A and see if that helps the MultiPlus cope more gracefully at the start of a charge session. 😊

@LutonNomad sounds like the post got clipped but I've dealt with exactly this on my own MultiPlus II 48/5000 setup.

The key thing most people miss is that PowerControl and PowerAssist are configured separately in VEConfigure — having a shore limit set doesn't automatically mean the unit will blend inverter power intelligently. You need to verify the input current limit is actually being enforced at the AC input, not just set as a soft preference.

Also worth noting: the Leaf's on-board charger can surge briefly above its nominal draw on startup. If your MultiPlus firmware is below ~490, there were known issues with transient overload detection interacting poorly with EV chargers specifically.

Check your ESS assistant configuration if you're running one — incorrect AC input limits there will override your PowerControl settings entirely.

What does your VRM dashboard show for AC input current when the trip occurs?
