Anyone else find their energy usage drops massively in summer without even trying?

Absolutely this, every single year without fail.

I've got a 400W solar setup on the van roof — two Renogy panels feeding into a Victron MPPT — and come May I almost feel guilty watching the Victron app. Battery's sitting at 100% by 10am and I'm practically inventing reasons to use electricity just to give the panels something to do.

But it's not just the generation side. I genuinely use far less. The longer days mean I'm outside until 9pm, so the lights barely come on. I'm not running a fan heater or an electric blanket. Even cooking changes — I'm doing more on the gas burner outside rather than the induction hob.

Last summer I was parked up on the Pembrokeshire coast for a fortnight and I think I ran my diesel heater once, just because of a weird cold snap. The rest of the time my Fogstar lithium barely dipped below 80% overnight.

There's something almost meditative about it. Winter feels like this constant anxious game of rationing and watching percentages. Summer is just... abundance.

The only thing I'd say is it lulled me into complacency about my battery health monitoring — I stopped paying attention because everything seemed fine, then struggled to readjust come October.

Curious whether people on static setups feel this the same way, or whether the van life element amplifies it because you're chasing the sun geographically as well as seasonally?

@CoastalCamper yes! On the narrowboat it's almost comical — the Fogstar lithium bank is basically full by 10am and I'm sitting there wondering what to do with the surplus 😅

Do you find the type of usage shifts too, not just the amount? Like in winter I'm running the diesel heater constantly which absolutely hammers consumption, but summer it basically disappears from my usage entirely. The solar's doing more but I'm also needing less — feels like a double win.

I've been thinking about adding a small garden office setup at home as well and wondering whether summer-only use would actually make a modest system genuinely viable without battery storage. Anyone done something like that — panels direct to a device or inverter with minimal storage?

Same story here, though I'm less inclined to celebrate it.

My van setup — 200Ah Fogstar Drift and a pair of 175W panels through a Victron SmartSolar — sits fat and smug all through July while I'm quietly aware that by October I'll be rationing every watt again. That's the part nobody mentions in these threads.

Summer lulls you into terrible habits. You stop watching the Victron app obsessively, you run the laptop without thinking, and then September arrives and you've forgotten how to be careful.

I keep my emergency backup discipline going year-round precisely because summer made me complacent once too often. Learned that lesson the hard way parked up in Scotland in a week of grey drizzle that wiped the smug look off my face fairly sharpish.

What gets me is how the shepherd's hut setup almost runs itself from around April onwards. The whole point of going off-grid was to be mindful of usage, but summer just removes that mental load entirely.

One thing I have noticed though — it's worth keeping an eye on your battery temps during the hot spells. Had my Fogstar bank sitting in direct sun last July and the BMS wasn't happy. A bit of insulation board sorted it, but worth flagging if anyone's got batteries in an exposed location.

@GafferTapeKing curious what's making you cautious about celebrating it — are you finding the surplus is masking something in the system you'd otherwise catch earlier?

@GazPrice that shepherd's hut comment really resonates — the garden office is exactly the same story for me.

Come May, my Victron MPPT is hitting absorption by mid-morning and I've barely thought about it. The real moment it clicked was last June when I checked the app and realised I'd not manually topped up the Fogstar bank in three weeks. Three weeks! In February I'm babying the whole system obsessively.

What I've noticed though — and nobody's mentioned this yet — is that behaviour shifts too. Longer days mean I'm naturally finishing work earlier, screen time drops, heating obviously goes off. The system looks brilliant partly because we're asking less of it.

Still feels like a small victory every year mind you. After the dark slog of a British winter, watching those watts roll in on a clear May morning never gets old.

@GazPrice same experience with the shepherd's hut here, though I'd add a word of caution against getting too comfortable.

Summer surplus can mask real problems in your system — a battery that's quietly degrading, a connection that's starting to corrode, a panel that's underperforming. Everything looks rosy when the sun's doing the heavy lifting.

I make a point of running my loads a bit harder in June/July specifically so I can stress-test properly. Find out now if something's marginal, not in November when you're relying on whatever scraps of daylight you can get.

The Victron logging is useful for this — worth actually analysing the data rather than just watching the pretty green bars fill up.
