Anyone else find their garden office heats up way too fast in summer?

Mine gets absolutely roasting by about 11am on a sunny day — it's a south-facing 4x3m cabin and by July it's basically unusable without doing something about it.

Tried a few things over the past couple of summers:

  • Reflective window film — made a noticeable difference, especially on the big front window. Fairly cheap fix.
  • Roof insulation top-up — the standard stuff in these garden offices is pretty poor tbh. Added 100mm Rockwool and it helped retain cool air in the morning longer.
  • Small 12v fan running off my Victron system — circulates air without hammering the battery. Barely touches the setup.

The real game-changer was fitting a proper roof vent with a solar-powered actuator. Opens automatically when the temp hits a threshold. Combined with a north-facing window slightly open it creates decent cross-ventilation.

I've also got my setup wired so I could run a portable AC unit off the battery bank during emergencies, but honestly it's too power-hungry for regular use unless you've got serious storage.

What's your cabin orientation and construction like? I reckon south/southwest facing ones with thin cladding suffer the worst. Also curious whether anyone's tried phase-change materials for thermal mass — seen a few commercial products claiming big things but no idea if they're worth it in a small space like this.

Anyone gone the full cool roof paint route? Seen it mentioned a few times but hard to find UK experiences specifically.

@Tina1971 South-facing 4x3 is basically a greenhouse in July, I feel your pain! One thing nobody ever mentions — check what's actually under your floor. A surprising amount of heat radiates up through an uninsulated base, especially if it's sitting on concrete or paving slabs that've been baking all morning.

Also worth looking at what your roof cladding is doing. I fitted a cheap wireless thermometer probe up into my roof void and was genuinely shocked — pushing 60°C up there by midday. That heat just conducts straight down into your workspace.

Reflective sarking membrane underneath the roof boards made a noticeable difference for me, more than the external shade sail I'd been relying on previously.

What's your cabin made of — standard tongue-and-groove pine, or something beefier?

Had exactly this battle with my static caravan setup last summer — west-facing, so it got absolutely hammered from about 2pm onwards. What made the biggest difference wasn't ventilation or fans, it was reflective window film. Fitted it myself for about £30 total, and the afternoon temperatures dropped noticeably within days.

The other thing worth considering is external shading rather than internal — by the time solar gain has already passed through the glass, you're fighting a losing battle from inside. A simple timber pergola with a shade sail does the job and actually looks decent.

@Tina1971 with a south-facing cabin you're getting the worst of it from morning onwards, so an overhang or fixed canopy on the south elevation would probably be your best long-term fix rather than chasing the heat once it's already in.

External roller blinds made a massive difference on my shed/office combo — stops the heat getting in rather than trying to shift it once it's already cooking inside. That's the key really, intercept before it enters.

Also worth checking your roof insulation if you haven't already. Mine was shocking until I added a proper PIR board layer — dropped peak temps noticeably.

On the tech side, I've got a small Victron MPPT feeding a Fogstar lithium battery running a 12v ceiling fan constantly during summer. Barely touches the battery and keeps air circulating rather than stagnating. Not a full solution but combined with the blinds it's transformed usability through July/August.

Something nobody's mentioned yet — thermal mass on the inside. I lined the lower half of my cabin walls with 18mm OSB backed with 50mm rigid PIR, then added a dark-painted concrete block course at floor level. Sounds counterintuitive but it absorbs the morning heat spike and releases it slowly, smoothing the temperature curve considerably.

Also worth looking at your roof specifically — a 4x3 south-facing cabin will absorb an enormous amount of radiant heat through the roof deck. I fitted a 25mm ventilated air gap between my corrugated roof and a secondary internal ceiling board, which made a measurable difference. Cheap to do if you're already up there for any reason.

Combining that with @RetiredEngineer86's external blind approach would stack benefits nicely — you're blocking incident radiation and reducing conducted heat through the structure simultaneously.
