Anyone else finding the days getting long enough now to finally stop worrying about battery levels?

Noticed it this morning actually — woke up to the Victron app showing 94% SOC before I'd even put the kettle on. Couple of weeks ago I was nursing the batteries through every grey afternoon like they were critically ill patients.

Living aboard means winter hits differently. The boat's moored under some trees on the north bank, so I lose maybe an hour of usable sun compared to an open field setup. December and January were genuinely grim — I had a Fogstar 100Ah lithium doing its best but I was running the engine more than I'd have liked just to top things off.

But right now? The panels are pulling decent amps by half nine in the morning. I've actually stopped checking the app every 20 minutes, which is a small but meaningful victory for my sanity.

The shift from "emergency backup mindset" to "abundance mindset" is real — suddenly I'm running things I rationed all winter without a second thought. Fans on, laptop charging mid-afternoon, even considering whether I can justify a small induction plate rather than always reaching for the gas hob.

Still keeping an eye on things. Old habits. But the anxiety has genuinely lifted.

Anyone else noticed the crossover point where it just... clicked? And for those with fixed home setups rather than boats — are you finding the angle improvement makes as much difference as the extra daylight hours, or is it mostly the hours for you?

Curious whether folks with east or west-facing panels are feeling this shift as dramatically as those with south-facing arrays.

@Del know exactly what you mean. My Fogstar 280Ah cells were sitting at 91% this morning before I'd even pulled the blinds back.

The real turning point for me was mid-March — suddenly the panels are pulling decent amps by 8am rather than that pathetic trickle you get all winter. South-facing roof helps obviously but even on overcast days the yield is respectable now.

I've actually had to start thinking about over-charging for the first time since October, which is a nice problem to have. Tweaked the absorption voltage settings in VictronConnect last week just to be cautious.

Anyone else noticing the Renogy panels seem to bounce back quicker than expected after a cloudy spell? Curious if that's just mine.

I've been nervous all winter about pulling too much from my bank for the car, but I'm wondering whether I can start scheduling overnight charges more confidently now the days are stretching out.

Roughly what percentage are you setting as your floor before you'd feel comfortable running a charge session? And do either of you use any kind of automation through Victron or similar to hold off charging until the batteries have hit a certain threshold? Trying to work out whether to set something up properly rather than just eyeballing the app every morning like I currently do 😅

@Del yes! Garden office has been properly self-sufficient again this past week or so. Stopped babying the Victron BMV readings around Tuesday honestly.

The longer days make such a difference when you've got panels at a less-than-ideal angle too — even my slightly dodgy east-facing array is pulling decent numbers by mid-morning now.

Only thing I'm actually watching is making sure I don't accidentally overcharge on the odd sunny afternoon. Had the BMS cut out once last spring because I hadn't adjusted the absorption settings after winter. Worth checking yours if you haven't already.

@Cleggy since you asked about EV charging — on the narrowboat I've been running a Type 2 session most afternoons when the bank crests 95% and the Victron MPPT shows surplus. It's taken a fair bit of configuration to get the charge current to back off gracefully rather than just collapse entirely when a cloud interrupts things, but the rhythm of it now feels almost mechanical. The longer days have genuinely changed the calculus; I was previously rationing everything quite carefully through February.

Worth noting though — "not worrying" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in @Del's framing. I'd reframe it as worrying less frequently. A sustained overcast week could still bite anyone running tight capacity margins, and I'm not convinced we're past that risk entirely yet.

@SophieFisher that's really interesting on the narrowboat — I've been trying to figure out the same thing on mine actually! Do you have a set SOC threshold before you'll kick off a Type 2 session, or are you just eyeballing the Victron app and going for it when solar's clearly cracking on?

I've been a bit nervous about pulling too much for EV charging and then having nothing left if we get a cloudy patch the next day. My Fogstar lithiums have been brilliant but I still find myself second-guessing the depth of discharge limits when I'm planning a bigger draw like that.

What size inverter are you running for it? That's been my other sticking point — wondering if mine is actually up to the job without causing the system to complain.
