Anyone else finding the Victron 75/15 overkill for a small van build?

Honestly depends what you're running mate. I've got the 75/15 on my narrowboat and for a modest setup it does feel like bringing a sledgehammer to crack a nut sometimes — but here's the thing, I've never once wished I'd gone smaller.

The beauty of Victron kit is the data you get out of it. Even if you're only pulling 8-10A on a sunny afternoon, being able to watch it all in the app and spot weird behaviour early is worth the extra tenner over a budget unit. Had a dodgy connection on my second panel show up as an anomaly in the logs before it became an actual problem. Paid for itself right there.

That said, if you're genuinely doing a micro-build — one panel, a leisure battery, a 12V fridge — the 75/10 is probably the sensible call and saves a few quid. Nothing wrong with right-sizing.

Where it gets interesting is if you think you might expand later. I told myself the garden office was "just temporary" too... three Fogstar batteries and a second panel later, I was very glad I'd left headroom in the controller.

So I'd flip the question — what panels are you running and what's your likely max array wattage? Because if there's even a chance you'll add a second panel down the line, the 75/15 is probably the right shout anyway.

What's everyone else reckon — worth paying for the bigger Victron headroom, or keep it lean and upgrade if needed?

@JimWilson the Bluetooth monitoring alone justifies the "overkill" tax for me — knowing exactly what my panels are doing from inside my tiny house while it's hammering down outside is genuinely priceless.

That said, there's a strong argument for sizing up on the MPPT even when your current array is modest. I originally ran a smaller unit on my 200W setup and regretted it the moment I added a second panel. The 75/15 gives you headroom to expand without rewiring the whole lot.

Worth noting: at current Victron pricing versus the faff of replacing a cheaper unit eighteen months later, the maths actually favour going slightly oversized from day one. Ask me how I know. 😅

What's your actual panel wattage and battery bank? That'd help nail down whether you're genuinely over-specced or just comfortably future-proofed.

@Titch the Bluetooth point is fair but I'm actually wondering if the 75/15 is even enough for certain setups rather than overkill — my concern is more about headroom. If someone's running 200W+ panels, aren't you already brushing against the 15A output limit depending on battery voltage?

I've been looking at upgrading my backup system and trying to work out whether to go straight to the 100/20 instead. Has anyone here actually had their 75/15 current-limit during peak summer sun? Curious whether that's a real-world issue or just me overthinking specs on paper before committing to a purchase.

@SunnyNomad valid point — I've got mine on a static caravan not a van so I'm hardly the target demographic here, but even I maxed out the 15A output faster than expected when I chucked a second panel on.

@JimWilson to your point about overkill — I'd actually argue the headroom is the whole point. Yes, a 75/15 on a single 100W panel feels excessive today, but most van builders I've seen end up expanding their setup within a year. Second panel, bigger battery, the works. Retrofitting a bigger MPPT later is a proper faff compared to just having the capacity already there.

@SunnyNomad is right to flag the other direction too — if you're running a compressor fridge plus charging laptops regularly, you might find the 15A ceiling surprisingly snug depending on your panel configuration.

The 75/15 sits in that sweet spot where it covers most realistic 12V van builds without drama. Call it overkill if you like, but I've never heard anyone complain they had too much controller headroom.

@Victron_Master makes a solid point about headroom. I'd add that the price difference between the 75/15 and the smaller 75/10 is honestly negligible these days — I picked mine up for about £15 more than the 10-amp version. For that you're getting proper future-proofing if you ever want to add a second panel later on.

That said, @SunnyNomad raises something worth considering — if you're genuinely running a tiny setup with no plans to expand, the 10-amp does everything you need without the faff.

For a van build specifically though, I'd stick with the 75/15 every time. Space is at a premium in a van so you're not replacing the controller when you inevitably squeeze another panel on the roof. Done it myself and wished I'd just bought sensibly first time round.
