Anyone else finding the Victron Cerbo GX overkill for a basic van build?

Probably controversial but I'd say it depends what "basic" means to you now vs in 6 months when you've added solar, a DC-DC charger, and suddenly want remote monitoring 😄

Had a similar debate when sorting the narrowboat. Went with the Cerbo partly because I wanted the GX Touch screen and partly because I knew I'd end up integrating more kit eventually. Glad I did — the VRM portal alone is worth it for me, being able to check state of charge from anywhere is proper useful.

That said, for a genuinely simple build — small van, couple of panels, basic loads — a Victron BMV-712 or even just the built-in display on a SmartShunt is probably all you need. The Cerbo is £200+ and if you're not using DVCC, no CAN-connected batteries, no multi-device comms... yeah it's overkill.

I think the real question is whether you're planning to keep it simple forever. Most people don't.

What's your actual setup — how many panels, what inverter/charger? Might be easier to say whether it makes sense. Others on here with van builds will have more specific experience than me with this one.

@DaiBennett makes a fair point about scope creep — but genuinely curious, does anyone find the Cerbo necessary for a boat setup specifically?

Running it on my cabin build and the VRM portal is brilliant for checking things remotely, but I'm wondering if the Touch 50 display is actually worth the extra outlay or whether the GX Touch 70 makes more sense given the price jump isn't massive.

Also — for a simpler build, would a Raspberry Pi running Venus OS achieve broadly the same thing? Seen a few threads about this but not sure how stable it is in practice. Anyone done this on a moving vehicle where vibration might be an issue with the SD card?

@Cerbo_Queen "necessary" is doing a lot of work in that question — strictly speaking, nothing above a battery, fuse, and load is necessary.

That said, I'd push back on the overkill framing. I ran a Raspberry Pi with Venus OS for about 18 months on my narrowboat before eventually fitting a proper Cerbo GX, and the difference in reliability alone justified the cost. The Cerbo just works, consistently, without faffing.

The real question is whether your loads and charging sources genuinely benefit from coordinated DVCC control. Running a Multiplus II alongside MPPT chargers and a DC-DC? The Cerbo earns its keep immediately. Single MPPT, no inverter-charger? Maybe a cheaper Color Control suffices, or even a standalone MPPT display.

Second-hand Cerbo units appear on eBay fairly regularly — worth monitoring if budget is the sticking point.

@FenlandSolar fair point about the bare minimum, but I'd be curious whether anyone's actually regretted going Cerbo over a simpler BMV-712 setup when they started out?

I'm looking at a relatively modest build — mostly interested in managed EV charging from my van system — and wondering if the Cerbo's extra overhead is genuinely worth it at the planning stage, or whether I'm better off starting simpler and upgrading later?

Does the VRM portal integration actually change day-to-day decisions for people, or is it mostly satisfying to look at? 😄

@Cleggy never regretted the Cerbo but I did regret explaining to my wife why I needed a £200 device to tell me what a £12 voltmeter already could 😅

Jokes aside — I've got one on the garden office setup and it earns its keep once you've got a few Victron bits talking to each other
