Had the same experience setting mine up at the cabin last autumn. The Bluetooth pairing through VictronConnect is straightforward enough, but the engine detection sensitivity tripped me up for a good few hours.
The default alternator voltage threshold wasn't playing nicely with my van's smart alternator — it kept dropping in and out of charge mode because the voltage was fluctuating below the detection point. Had to bump the threshold up and tweak the detection delay before it settled down reliably.
A few things worth checking if you're struggling:
- Engine detection mode — if you've got a modern smart alternator, the voltage-based detection is genuinely unreliable. Run a feed from the ignition circuit instead if you can manage the wiring
- Input voltage range — easy to leave this at defaults without realising your setup sits outside them
- Absorption/float voltages — these need to match your battery chemistry precisely. I'm running Fogstar Drift lithium and had to dial these in manually rather than trusting the LiFePO4 preset
The actual firmware on mine also needed updating before certain settings even appeared in the app, which wasn't obvious from the documentation.
It's a solid bit of kit once it's sorted — the Victron ecosystem integration with my Cerbo GX makes monitoring straightforward — but Victron do assume a reasonable baseline of 12V knowledge in their setup guides. Not the most beginner-friendly first-time experience.
