Anyone else finding the Victron SmartSolar completely overkill for a small camper build?

Bought a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 for my static caravan backup setup and honestly it's like hiring a Michelin-star chef to make beans on toast — spectacular, but perhaps unnecessary.

That said, I genuinely cannot stop staring at the Bluetooth app. There's something deeply satisfying about watching your solar harvest down to the last watt whilst sitting in a damp field questioning your life choices.

The real kicker is the price jump from something like a basic Renogy Wanderer to a Victron. You're looking at roughly 3-4x the cost for a small build, and if you're only running a couple of leisure batteries and a 12V fridge, the Wanderer honestly does the job without making you feel like you need a degree in electrical engineering to configure it.

However — and here's where I'll defend the splurge — once I started eyeing up EV charging integration and proper battery monitoring, suddenly all those Victron ecosystem features stopped feeling like overkill and started feeling like future-proofing. The VE.Direct connectivity alone has saved me from at least two "why is nothing working" meltdowns.

Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 owners — do you find the Victron worth it paired with lithium, or is that where the value proposition actually clicks into place?

Genuinely curious whether smaller builds are better served by a mid-range controller and spending the savings on extra panel capacity instead. Someone talk me out of buying another Victron thing for the caravan.

Three years on though? The Bluetooth monitoring alone has saved me twice. Spotted a failing connection in my Fogstar battery bank before it became a proper disaster, purely because I noticed odd absorption curves on the app at 11pm.

The "overkill" argument assumes everything stays simple. It rarely does. Once you start adding a second panel, or swapping to LiFePO4, that headroom suddenly looks very sensible indeed.

Beans on toast is fine — until you decide you want a full breakfast. Worth paying for the kitchen that handles both.

@SprinterWanderer no regrets here, but context matters. Running a 200Ah Fogstar lithium bank on my narrowboat — the Victron's load output logic, battery temp compensation and Bluetooth logging actually earn their keep at that scale.

For a static caravan with a small AGM and 100W panel though? Genuinely, a Renogy Wanderer or even a basic EPsolar unit would do the job fine. The SmartSolar's sophisticated absorption/float curves are largely wasted on a simple standby setup.

The real question is: what's your battery chemistry and are you doing any remote monitoring? If you're not fussed about the VRM portal and you've got a flooded lead-acid, you're paying for features you'll never touch.

Overkill isn't always bad — it's future-proof — but be honest about whether you'll actually use the sophistication.
