Honestly though, after years of running a narrowboat through British winters, I've learned that anyone who specs a garden office battery for average UK weather is absolutely kidding themselves — you need to plan for a fortnight of grey soup with occasional drizzle as the highlight.
A few things that actually helped me:
- Upsized to a Fogstar Drift 200Ah LiFePO4 — the capacity headroom makes a shocking difference when your panels are producing 40W on a good day
- Ruthless load audit — that little electric radiator is the silent killer, sorted mine with a 12V electric blanket instead (don't judge me)
- Secondary input — even a small hook-up from a mains feed on the absolute worst weeks saves your cycle count from absolutely cratering
The real villain nobody talks about is self-consumption from the inverter sat there doing nothing at 2am — my Victron Multiplus was quietly munching away like a labrador near an unattended cheese board.
What's everyone actually running capacity-wise? And has anyone gone the route of a small wind turbine to complement the panels through winter? Feels like the obvious answer but I've yet to find one that doesn't sound like a washing machine full of spanners when it gets going.
Would love to know if anyone's cracked this properly or if we're all just collectively pretending our setups are fine whilst nervously watching the state-of-charge drop.
