Familiar problem — I've dealt with similar thermal management headaches in my van conversion and on the boat, and the principles translate pretty well to garden offices.

The core issue is usually that people size their heating for the structure but forget that battery capacity drops significantly in cold weather too. If you're running an electric heater off a lithium bank, you're fighting on two fronts simultaneously — the cells are delivering less usable capacity at the exact moment your draw is highest.

A few things that made a real difference for me:

  • Insulation first, always. Sounds obvious but most garden offices are criminally under-insulated. Retrofit rigid PIR board (Kingspan or Celotex) wherever you can access. Even 50mm on the floor makes a huge difference.
  • Victron SmartSolar + a decent battery monitor so you actually know what's happening rather than guessing. I use Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 cells which handle cold better than most budget options.
  • Consider a small diesel/propane heater (Webasto or Chinese equivalent) as the primary heat source rather than relying purely on electric. Massively better energy density per £ in winter.
  • Thermal mass — a few litres of water in containers inside the space acts as a buffer against overnight temperature swings.

What's your current setup — solar only, grid-tied, or hybrid? And what are you actually running for heating? That would help narrow down whether it's a generation problem, a storage problem, or just a heat-loss problem. Almost certainly all three if it's below 5°C and you're struggling.

Genuinely curious whether others here have gone the diesel heater route for garden offices specifically — feels underused in this forum compared to the van community.

My static caravan used to turn into a walk-in freezer every November — insulation was basically decorative at that point.

Honestly the biggest win for me was sorting the floor first. Everyone obsesses over walls and roof but cold

@WelshCamper what's your actual insulation spec in the office walls? Because I'm convinced that's where most people are haemorrhaging heat before they even think about the heating system.

My garden office is supposedly "insulated" but the builder clearly had a generous definition of that word. 50mm of what I can only describe as optimistic rockwool between 89mm studwork is doing precisely nothing useful once it drops below freezing.

Running a Victron Multiplus off a 200Ah Fogstar lithium bank and the draw overnight from a small panel heater is absolutely murdering my state of charge by morning.

Is anyone actually hitting proper PassivHaus-adjacent standards in a timber-frame garden office, or is that just unrealistic for a typical 3x4m structure? Wondering whether to prioritise adding more insulation before throwing more battery capacity at the problem.

@DodgyMechanic raises the right question. Insulation spec matters enormously — most off-the-shelf garden offices are embarrassingly underspecified for winter use.

Practical things worth checking:

  • Wall U-value — you want below 0.28 W/m²K ideally. Most standard garden buildings are nowhere near.
  • Thermal bridging at the frame studs — often overlooked and kills performance
  • Floor insulation — cold floors drag the whole space down fast
  • Air tightness — draught gaps compound everything once wind picks up

On my narrowboat I learned that throwing more heating at a poorly insulated space is just burning money. Solved the boat with Kingspan between the liners and the difference was dramatic.

What's the wall construction on yours — timber frame with what infill? And is it on legs or ground-level? Ground contact makes a significant difference to heat loss in my experience.

@ExFirefighter @DodgyMechanic both right on the insulation point. Most flat-pack garden offices ship with 50mm mineral wool as standard — looks fine on paper until you actually calculate the U-value and realise it's roughly on par with a poorly insulated 1970s extension.

For my shepherd's hut I ended up doing a hybrid approach: 100mm Celotex between the ribs, then a 25mm Celotex continuous layer across the inside to kill the thermal bridging through the timber frame. That made a measurable difference.

The other thing worth checking is the floor — it's almost always the weakest point and people ignore it completely. Cold floor means cold room regardless of what you've done to the walls.
