Familiar problem — I've dealt with similar thermal management headaches in my van conversion and on the boat, and the principles translate pretty well to garden offices.
The core issue is usually that people size their heating for the structure but forget that battery capacity drops significantly in cold weather too. If you're running an electric heater off a lithium bank, you're fighting on two fronts simultaneously — the cells are delivering less usable capacity at the exact moment your draw is highest.
A few things that made a real difference for me:
- Insulation first, always. Sounds obvious but most garden offices are criminally under-insulated. Retrofit rigid PIR board (Kingspan or Celotex) wherever you can access. Even 50mm on the floor makes a huge difference.
- Victron SmartSolar + a decent battery monitor so you actually know what's happening rather than guessing. I use Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 cells which handle cold better than most budget options.
- Consider a small diesel/propane heater (Webasto or Chinese equivalent) as the primary heat source rather than relying purely on electric. Massively better energy density per £ in winter.
- Thermal mass — a few litres of water in containers inside the space acts as a buffer against overnight temperature swings.
What's your current setup — solar only, grid-tied, or hybrid? And what are you actually running for heating? That would help narrow down whether it's a generation problem, a storage problem, or just a heat-loss problem. Almost certainly all three if it's below 5°C and you're struggling.
Genuinely curious whether others here have gone the diesel heater route for garden offices specifically — feels underused in this forum compared to the van community.
