Anyone else finding their MPPT controller underreporting in cold weather?

Been noticing this with my Victron SmartSolar 100/30 over the past few weeks. During the colder mornings we've had lately, the actual output feels noticeably higher than what the controller's logging — panels are clearly producing well in the crisp conditions but the figures look a bit flat.

From what I've read, it's partly down to how the MPPT calculates things at lower cell temperatures. Silicon panels actually perform better in cold weather (lower temps reduce resistance), so there can be a mismatch between what the controller expects and what's physically happening, especially during that first hour or two after dawn.

A few things I've been trying:

  • Double-checking my panel temperature compensation settings in the VictronConnect app
  • Comparing the Victron readings against a clamp meter on the cable
  • Logging daily yield manually for a couple of weeks to spot patterns

The clamp meter comparison has been the most revealing — there's a consistent gap on cold clear mornings that closes up by midday.

Curious whether anyone else has seen this across different brands. I'd imagine cheaper controllers might handle it differently to Victron. Also wondering if it's more pronounced on certain panel types — mine are fairly standard 200W poly panels, nothing fancy.

Has anyone actually contacted Victron support about it, or found a firmware version that seems to handle cold-weather calibration better? I know there have been a few updates over the past year.

Would be good to get a sense of whether this is widespread or just something quirky with my particular setup.

@Louise1984 Interesting one this. Worth checking whether it's actually underreporting or whether you're seeing the panels genuinely outperforming their rated spec in the cold - which is completely normal. Silicon PV cells are more efficient at lower temperatures, so on a crisp clear winter morning you can actually exceed the panel's STC-rated output by a fair margin.

The Victron logging should be accurate enough, so I'd be curious what you're comparing against. Are you measuring at the terminals independently with a clamp meter, or just going by feel?

Also worth double-checking your panel temperature coefficient settings if you've got any custom config applied - though the SmartSolar typically handles this automatically. What panels are you running with it?

@Louise1984 Cold temps actually increase Voc on panels — so paradoxically you can get higher wattage than your STC nameplate rating on a crisp clear morning. Your MPPT isn't necessarily underreporting, it might just be that your expectations are calibrated to summer figures.

Worth logging your actual panel voltage at say 5°C vs 25°C — you'll likely see it sitting noticeably higher than spec. My Renogy panels on the van regularly push past rated Voc in winter, which briefly confused me too.

The Victron VRM app should give you a pretty accurate picture of what's actually being harvested vs what the panels are theoretically capable of at that temperature. If the numbers still look off after accounting for temp coefficients, then I'd start questioning the controller logging.

@Louise1984 yeah this caught me out last winter with my setup too. Worth checking your temp compensation settings in the VictronConnect app — if the battery temp sensor isn't configured properly the MPPT can make dodgy adjustments that skew the logged figures.

Also double-check your panel Voc against the controller's input ceiling on those cold mornings. @FET_Queen's right about cold boosting Voc — if you're nudging close to the 100V limit the controller might actually be clipping and that's your discrepancy rather than a logging bug.

Mine sorted itself once I:

  • set the correct battery temp coefficient
  • moved the temp sensor away from a draught

Victron's logging is generally pretty solid so I'd suspect a config issue before assuming a firmware fault tbh

Had exactly this on my van conversion last January — panels were absolutely loving the cold clear mornings we had, genuinely pumping out numbers I hadn't seen all summer. Took me an embarrassingly long time to realise the logging was fine, I just hadn't accounted for the temperature coefficient working in my favour for once.

Worth checking your Victron Connect app history properly rather than just the live display — the SmartSolar logs are actually pretty granular. I found mine looked "wrong" until I compared against the yield graphs properly.

@FET_Queen is on the right track about Voc. The slightly alarming flip side is that on a very cold morning you can exceed your controller's rated input voltage if your string isn't sized conservatively. Worth double-checking that before celebrating the free watts. 🙂
