Anyone else had issues with a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 dropping connection to the VictronConnect app mid-charge?

Just fitted a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 to my Transit camper build last weekend. 200W of solar on the roof (2x 100W panels in series), feeding into a 100Ah lithium (Battle Born). All wired up, settings look spot on, and the charge figures seem sensible — was seeing around 14-15A on a decent sunny afternoon.

The problem is the Bluetooth connection to VictronConnect keeps dropping out. I'll be monitoring it fine, then it just disappears from the device list entirely. Have to go and stand basically on top of the controller to get it to show up again. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S21, Android 13, and I've tried it on my partner's iPhone 12 as well — same issue on both.

I've checked the firmware and it's on v3.14, which I believe is current. Nothing else obvious running nearby that could cause interference — no inverter running at the time, no other Bluetooth devices paired. Has anyone else seen this with the 100/30 specifically, or is this just a known quirk of Victron's Bluetooth implementation? Wondering if a VE.Direct to USB cable and just running it wired is the way to go.

Had this exact same headache on my boat setup with a SmartSolar 75/15 a while back. Turned out the Bluetooth just doesn't love being more than about 5 metres away, especially through a metal bulkhead or roof.

Worth checking a couple of things:

  • Is your phone's location permission enabled for VictronConnect? Sounds daft but Android requires it for BLE scanning
  • Try forgetting the device in the app and re-pairing from scratch
  • Make sure you're on the latest firmware — there was a patch a while back specifically addressing connection drops

Also, are you running any other Victron kit nearby? My SmartShunt occasionally caused interference until I updated everything together via the app.

If it keeps dropping mid-charge rather than just on initial connect, that's slightly different behaviour — what phone/OS are you on?

Had this with my SmartSolar 100/20 last summer. Worth checking whether your phone's battery optimisation settings are killing the Bluetooth connection in the background — Android is notorious for this. Go into your app permissions and set VictronConnect to unrestricted battery usage.

Also, are you running the latest firmware on the MPPT itself? I updated mine via the app (when it was connected) and the dropout issue improved noticeably. Settings > Product Info if you can catch it connected long enough.

One other thing — how far away are you from the unit when it drops? Bluetooth range on these is decent but anything structural between you and it (metal bulkhead, etc.) can cause grief. In a Transit the cab partition might be a factor depending on where you've mounted the controller.
