Yep, noticed it straight away when the direct debit went out. Another bump, no real warning. Gets tiresome doesn't it.
Honestly it's what pushed me to finally pull the trigger on expanding my solar setup last spring. I'd been humming and hawing about it for ages but watching the unit rate creep up quarter after quarter just made the maths too obvious to ignore. Panels paid for themselves faster than I'd originally calculated when I first modelled it all out.
Still grid-tied so I'm not completely off the hook, but my import has dropped massively. Dark winter months are still a pain obviously — no getting around the physics of it in the UK — but from around March through October I'm barely touching the grid at all.
The bit that really winds me up is the standing charge. You pay it whether you use a single unit or not. Even people genuinely trying to reduce their consumption get stung by it. Feels deliberately punitive somehow.
Anyone else finding their battery storage is helping offset the worst of it? I added a second Fogstar battery to my setup earlier this year and storing the midday surplus to cover evenings has made a noticeable dent. Curious whether others have done similar and what kind of difference you're actually seeing on the bills.
Would be interested to hear from folk who are fully off-grid too — is it genuinely worth the upfront cost when you factor in everything, standing charges included? Always tempted to cut the cord entirely but not quite there yet.
