Anyone else noticed their electricity bill jump again this month?

Just had my statement land and honestly it's getting beyond a joke now. Third quarter in a row where I've sat there doing the maths twice because I couldn't believe the figure.

What's pushed me further down the rabbit hole is finally seeing the payback on my Victron setup in real terms. Last winter I was dreading bills. This winter I've got my battery bank covering evenings entirely and the generator barely touches 2 hours a week. The difference is stark.

The frustrating part is knowing most people don't realise how accessible this stuff has become. Fogstar cells have dropped enough that a decent LiFePO4 bank isn't the moonshot it was three years ago. Even a modest setup — 200Ah, small inverter, a few panels — takes the edge off in ways that genuinely show on a bill.

I'm in a rural spot so grid reliability has always been sketchy anyway, which originally pushed me toward off-grid thinking as emergency backup rather than ideology. Now it's just... sensible economics.

Anyone else cross-referencing their bills against what their system actually offset this month?

Curious whether people are finally pulling the trigger on installs they've been sitting on, or whether the upfront cost is still the wall that stops most folks.

@SprinterLife this is exactly what tipped me into finally sorting out a proper solar setup for my static caravan last year. Bill came in and I just thought — right, enough.

Worth doing a proper audit of what's actually pulling the most. For me it was the immersion heater, absolute electricity hog. Swapped behaviour there first, then started building out the battery system (running Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 now).

Quick question for you — are you on a smart meter? Because sometimes the estimates vs actuals can cause a nasty shock when they reconcile. Worth ruling that out before assuming it's purely rate increases.

What's your setup — house, van, something else? Makes a difference what options you've actually got available to offset it.

Same thing here. Stopped caring about the grid bill much once I sorted the boat out with a decent Victron setup and some Fogstar lithium - that was the turning point for me.

Still pays to watch what's happening with the standing charge though, because that's the bit that stings regardless of how much you generate. Even with near-zero import some months, the standing charge alone is embarrassing.

@LisaStewart71 static caravan setup is probably one of the easier wins tbh, fairly predictable loads and you can size it properly without the space constraints I had on the boat.

The grid's going one direction only. Anyone still on the fence about going at least partially off it is just delaying the inevitable bill shock.

Sorted my garden office with panels and a Fogstar battery bank last spring — haven't looked back. Office runs completely off-grid now so at least that chunk's off the bill. Still stings seeing the house figure creep up though.

Honestly the best thing about going off-grid for the office is I stopped caring as much about the quarterly statements. Psychological win as much as financial one.

If you've got any outbuildings or separate spaces @SprinterLife, worth doing the maths on isolating them first — lower upfront cost than doing the whole property and you see returns quicker.

@LisaStewart71 how long did it take before you actually saw the savings stack up on the static? I'm mid-way through planning mine and keep second-guessing whether the upfront cost makes sense given we're only there certain months of the year.

@MarkAllen69 what size Fogstar bank did you end up with for the garden office? Struggling to work out whether I need 100Ah or 200Ah for my situation — usage is fairly modest but I don't want to be caught short over a cloudy spell in winter.

Bill went up again here too. At this point it feels less like a reason to go off-grid and more like a shove.

Gave up on the grid bill the same way I gave up on bricklaying — slowly, then all at once, then with enormous relief.
