Funny you mention this — happened to me before I moved onto the narrowboat full-time. Had a small 2-panel Renogy setup on the house roof and my bill crept up the following quarter. Took me ages to figure out what was happening.
Turns out the psychology of having solar made me unconsciously use more electricity. Dishwasher mid-afternoon, extra laundry cycles, leaving things on charge "because it's free." Except on cloudy November days in the Midlands, it very much wasn't free.
A few things I've seen catch people out:
- Feed-in vs. self-consumption — if you're exporting when you're out and importing when you're home, the numbers won't stack up
- Standing charges — these never go away and have shot up lately regardless of what you generate
- Behaviour creep — see above, guilty as charged
Since moving to the boat with a proper Victron MPPT setup and a decent Fogstar lithium bank, I actually see the numbers in real time on the VRM portal. That visibility changed everything. You stop being vague about consumption pretty quickly when you're watching a battery percentage drop.
I think a lot of domestic solar installs just lack decent monitoring. People assume the panels are handling it and stop paying attention to their usage patterns.
Anyone else tracking this properly? Would be curious whether those of you with home setups are using anything decent for consumption monitoring, or just relying on the smart meter in-home display.
