Anyone else noticed their electricity bills absolutely skyrocket this quarter?

Gave up on the grid two years ago for the van life and honestly watching you lot panic about bills is the closest thing I get to entertainment these days 😂

But seriously, it's brutal out there — my mate just showed me his quarterly statement and I nearly choked on my brew. Three figures per month for a small terrace? Absolute piracy.

The irony is I spent what felt like a fortune upfront on my setup — Victron MPPT, couple of Fogstar lithium batteries, 400W of panels on the roof — and people thought I was mad. Who's mad now, eh?

Obviously van life isn't for everyone (the missus has opinions about this), but even for a fixed home there's loads you can do to soften the blow:

  • Solar diverters for your immersion heater
  • Battery storage — prices have genuinely dropped a fair bit
  • Even just a decent Victron battery monitor so you actually know what you're consuming instead of getting ambushed by the bill

The real villain here isn't even the unit rate — it's the standing charge. Paying daily just to be connected to the thing should be illegal.

Anyone else actually crunched their break-even numbers on a home solar setup recently? Curious whether the sums are finally making sense for regular households or whether it's still a stretch.

@ExFarmer21 van life's one way to dodge it, I'll give you that 😄

My situation's a bit different — I'm still grid-tied but built out a proper emergency backup after the 2022 storms left us dark for four days. Fogstar lithium batteries, Victron Multiplus, decent solar array on the roof.

The funny thing is watching my bills shrink while neighbours are absolutely horrified by their direct debits. Last quarter I exported more than I imported, which felt almost criminal given the current climate.

The real story nobody tells you is that the upfront cost terrifies people, but spread over time? It genuinely pays back. Our longest grid-free stretch this winter was eleven days straight without even trying.

The grid's becoming a backup for us rather than the other way round.

Still grid-tied here too but running a fairly substantial Victron-based hybrid system across the shepherd's hut and main property. What's made the real difference is time-of-use shifting — charging the battery bank during cheap-rate Octopus Agile slots (sometimes genuinely negative p/kWh) and covering daytime loads from stored solar.

The EV charging piece has been the biggest win. Scheduling that entirely off-peak has taken a serious chunk off the bill compared to neighbours who just plug in whenever convenient.

Worth noting for anyone considering the hybrid route: the payback calculation has changed considerably given where unit rates now sit. Numbers that looked marginal two years ago look quite reasonable today. I'd suggest anyone still fully grid-dependent at least model what a modest battery system would do to their consumption profile before dismissing it as too expensive.

@SuffolkExplorer curious what your Victron setup looks like — I'm running a MultiPlus-II in the T6 with Fogstar Drift lithium and it's transformed how I think about energy use generally.

The bills panic is understandable though. Even off-grid you're not immune — propane, wood pellets, anything with a supply chain has gone mental.

What I'd say to anyone still grid-tied: time-of-use tariffs + even a modest battery buffer makes a genuine dent. Octopus Flux or Intelligent Go aren't perfect but they're a different world vs standard variable.

The real issue is most people have no visibility into their actual consumption patterns. Proper monitoring — even just a Shelly clamp on the consumer unit — changes your behaviour almost immediately once you can see the numbers in real time.

Just jumping in here — we're fully off-grid at our smallholding in Wales and honestly the timing couldn't have been better given what's happened to tariffs.

@SuffolkExplorer would love to hear more about your shepherd's hut setup actually, we've been toying with the idea of renting ours out and wondering how to handle the power side sensibly without running separate systems everywhere.

@T6Solar the Fogstar Drift cells seem to get a good rep on here — we went with second-life EV cells for our main bank which was considerably cheaper per kWh but obviously came with more faff involved in the balancing side of things.

For anyone still grid-tied and struggling, even a modest battery system to shift your overnight cheap-rate charging has made a massive difference for people I know. Not a full solution but definitely takes the edge off those quarterly shocks.
