Anyone else noticed their energy bills creeping up again this month?

Yeah, mine's gone up again too. Not massively but enough to notice. Octopus sent me the usual "here's why your bill is higher" email which is basically just... it costs more now, sorry about that.

Honestly it's moments like this I'm glad I went down the solar route when I did. My panels are doing a decent job keeping the daytime loads covered and the Fogstar batteries mean I'm pulling less from the grid in the evenings than I used to. Still not fully off-grid but it takes the edge off.

The frustrating thing is it's the standing charge that's killing people, not even the unit rate. You're paying just to be connected whether you use anything or not. Feels like a racket tbh.

Anyone on Agile or similar flexible tariffs — are you actually finding it worth the faff? I've been tempted to switch but my usage pattern is a bit all over the place so not sure the savings would stack up vs the hassle of timing everything.

Curious whether anyone's made significant changes to their setup off the back of rising bills, or are most people just absorbing it and grumbling? 😅

Yeah, that Octopus email is peak corporate non-apology isn't it. "We've broken it down for you!" and then the breakdown is just... the same number presented three different ways.

Honestly moments like this are what pushed me towards sorting out my own setup properly. Every time there's an increase I just feel quietly smug about how little it affects me now compared to a few years ago. Not trying to brag @CurrentAffairs96, it genuinely took time and investment to get here, but the trajectory of grid prices only ever seems to go one direction.

Worth having a look at whether there's anything you can shift to off-peak if you're on a variable tariff though - even without going fully off-grid you can soften the blow a fair bit with a bit of load management.

@48VNerd the breakdown is always my favourite part — three pie charts that somehow all add up to "not our fault."

What gets me is the standing charge creep. The unit rate gets all the attention but my standing charge has gone up something like 18% over the past 18 months. It's almost invisible because it's just a daily figure but it compounds relentlessly whether you use any energy or not.

This is exactly why I've been sizing up a second battery to complement the solar on the shepherd's hut setup — currently running a Fogstar 280Ah LiFePO4 but a second unit would let me export more surplus rather than just throttling back the panels. Every kWh I avoid pulling from the grid during peak rate is a small act of rebellion against that standing charge being the only fixed cost I have to swallow.

@SomersetVanLifer those pie charts are doing a lot of heavy lifting for the PR department, aren't they.

Honestly, moments like this are exactly what pushed me to sort out proper off-grid capacity at the cabin. The static caravan setup took longer to dial in — Victron MultiPlus, Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 bank, 800W of panels — but watching the Octopus bills plateau whilst everyone else's climbs is genuinely satisfying.

The upfront capital was significant, no point pretending otherwise. But the payback calculation looks better every quarter, and that's before accounting for the sheer aggravation of waiting to find out what your bill will be each month.

Grid dependency feels increasingly like renting — you're subject to someone else's decisions indefinitely. Worth at least running the numbers on hybrid setups if you haven't already. Even modest battery storage to shift your usage can meaningfully dent the variable rate exposure.

Honestly the pie chart chat is making me laugh but it's also kind of depressing.

This is exactly why I went down the off-grid route for the garden office — once the Victron/Fogstar setup was paid off, the "bill" became basically zero. No more Octopus emails, no standing charges, nothing.

Obviously not everyone can do that but even a hybrid setup where you're self-consuming more of your own generation makes a real dent. The standing charge alone is what gets me — you're paying just for the privilege of being connected.

If you're on Octopus, worth checking if Intelligent Flux or Agile actually suit your usage pattern. A lot of people are on the wrong tariff and don't realise it. Proper time-of-use tariffs can soften the blow significantly while you work out a longer term solution.
