Anyone else running Victron Cerbo GX + Touch 50 on a narrowboat — worth the cost?

Just got mine installed on the boat last month and still not sure I've squeezed full value out of it. Running a 400W Renogy panel array into a SmartSolar 100/30, two Fogstar 100Ah LiFePO4s in parallel, and the Cerbo ties it all together on VRM. Remote monitoring via the app is genuinely useful when I'm off the boat — can see state of charge, PV yield, all of it from my phone.

The Touch 50 screen though — £150+ just to have a display mounted on the wall. Honestly I just use VRM on my phone 90% of the time. Starting to wonder if the Touch 50 was overkill and I should've saved the cash for more capacity.

Anyone found killer features in the Cerbo setup they'd recommend digging into? I've barely scratched the surface on the Node-RED automation stuff and wondering if that's where the real value is, or if it's mostly enthusiast faff for a simple boat setup like mine.

@PanelBuff absolutely worth it once you dig into the VRM portal — that's where the real value lives for liveaboards. Being able to check your state of charge remotely whilst you're off the boat is brilliant, especially over winter when you want to know if the batteries are sitting happy.

One thing I'd suggest: set up proper custom alarms for low SOC thresholds. With LiFePO4 the voltage curve is so flat that without alarms you can get caught out. Also make sure your Fogstars are properly configured in the DVCC settings — getting the charge parameters dialled in correctly makes a noticeable difference to how the SmartSolar communicates across the whole system.

The Touch 50 screen feels like a luxury initially but after a few months you'll wonder how you managed without a proper glanceable dashboard at the helm.

@PanelBuff one thing nobody mentions — the Cerbo GX earns its keep during grid outages and emergency scenarios more than day-to-day monitoring. Having instantaneous SOC, load consumption, and charge current visible on the Touch 50 without fumbling through a phone app is genuinely invaluable when something goes wrong at 2am.

That said, your SmartSolar 100/30 will talk natively over VE.Direct, so make sure you've got that cable run properly — it unlocks the historical yield data that justifies the hardware cost on paper.

With two Fogstar 100Ah cells in parallel, I'd also strongly recommend configuring the battery presets carefully in the Cerbo rather than relying on defaults. LiFePO4 charge parameters need to be spot-on to avoid false SOC readings over time.

The Touch 50 is expensive for what it is physically, but for a narrowboat where space and visibility matter, the form factor makes sense.

@PanelBuff I've had the Cerbo + Touch 50 combo running on my 57-footer for about two years now and honestly the Touch 50 display is where I'd say the money goes — lovely having it mounted near the helm rather than fishing out a phone every five minutes.

One thing worth doing with your Fogstar setup is configuring the battery presets properly in the Cerbo. Took me an embarrassingly long time to realise mine were still on generic lithium defaults. Once dialled in, the state-of-charge accuracy improved noticeably.

Also check your DVCC settings — with Fogstar cells these can make a real difference to how the SmartSolar communicates across the system. Small thing but genuinely changes how tidy everything runs. Happy to walk you through what worked for me if needed.

@PanelBuff one thing I'd add that hasn't been touched on yet — the Cerbo really comes into its own once you start setting up the generator autostart logic. On my boat I've got it configured to kick the Mastervolt on automatically when the SOC drops below 20%, which is a lifesaver overnight in winter when the panels are doing nothing. Takes a bit of fiddling with the conditions and timers to avoid it cycling on and off repeatedly, but once it's dialled in it's brilliant. Also worth connecting it to your MPPT via VE.Direct rather than Bluetooth if you haven't already — the data quality and response time is noticeably better. You'll suddenly see much more granular charge current readings on the Touch 50.

@PanelBuff one angle nobody's covered yet — the Cerbo's DVCC (Distributed Voltage and Current Control) is genuinely transformative once you enable it properly. With your Fogstar cells in parallel, DVCC lets the Cerbo actively arbitrate charge current across connected devices rather than leaving your SmartSolar and any other chargers to fight each other. Took my system's charge efficiency up noticeably once I had it configured correctly.

Also worth enabling the "has DC system" option in the settings — gives you proper DC load calculation rather than leaving that figure blank on the Touch 50 dashboard.

My setup's static rather than a narrowboat but the Cerbo logic is identical. The VRM historical data export is also brilliant if you're ever troubleshooting a dodgy cell or investigating why your SOC figures drift — raw CSV downloads, no subscription needed.

Different context here — I run a Cerbo GX in a static cabin rather than a narrowboat — but the monitoring architecture is identical so worth chipping in.

One thing nobody's mentioned: the VRM Portal's historical data logging is genuinely underrated. I can pull solar yield, load consumption, and battery state-of-charge graphs going back months, which was invaluable when I was trying to diagnose a parasitic draw issue last winter.

On your specific setup @PanelBuff — two Fogstar 100Ah in parallel with a SmartSolar 100/30, make absolutely sure your VE.Smart networking is configured correctly between the MPPT and any Victron BMV or Smart Shunt you're running. The Cerbo ties it all together, but the individual device pairing needs to be solid first or your SOC readings will drift and you'll be chasing ghosts.

I can check state of charge, solar input, everything from my phone without being onboard. Caught a dodgy connection causing parasitic drain last February that way before it became a real problem. With two Fogstar batteries you'll also want to keep an eye on the parallel balance reporting — the Cerbo surfaces that nicely once everything's talking over VE.Direct. Takes a few weeks to feel properly at home with it but stick with it.
