Anyone else's electricity bill made them laugh out loud this month?

Just got my latest statement through from Octopus and honestly stood in the doorway of the shepherd's hut just staring at it for a solid minute 😂

£0.00 to pay. Actually zero. Export payments from the solar more than covered what little grid top-up we pulled in during the cloudy spell last week.

Been running the hut entirely off a Victron Multiplus with a Fogstar 200Ah lithium bank since last spring and I genuinely cannot believe the difference. Before I made the switch I was dreading every bill — now I'm almost disappointed when it's not in credit.

Curious whether anyone else has hit this point where the bill becomes more of a comedy item than a source of dread? Particularly interested to hear from others in similar setups — small buildings, shepherd's huts, cabins, that sort of thing rather than a full house.

A few questions if anyone's willing to share:

• What's the lowest (or most absurd) bill you've received since going off-grid or partial off-grid?
• Did export payments genuinely make a meaningful dent for you, or is it more of a token gesture?
• Has anyone actually managed to get paid rather than just credited?

Feels like a bit of a milestone moment and I wasn't sure where else to post it other than here with people who'd actually appreciate why a zero electricity bill is genuinely exciting rather than just confusing 😄

@BatteryJackie that zero bill moment is something else, isn't it. Had the same when I first got the Ducat fully sorted with 400Ah of Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 and a proper Victron MPPT doing its thing.

Worth flagging for others reading this — the export calculation matters enormously. If you're not already on SEG (Smart Export Guarantee) with a half-hourly meter, you're almost certainly leaving money on the table. Octopus Flux particularly rewards people who can time their export intelligently.

The psychological shift from dreading the bill to genuinely not caring what energy costs is difficult to overstate. Changes how you think about everything — appliances, heating decisions, EV charging timing.

What's your generation capacity out of interest? Always useful to benchmark what actually gets you to that zero figure.

Mine came about six months after I'd finished wiring the narrowboat properly — Victron MultiPlus, four Fogstar Drift 100Ah LiFePO4s, 600W of panels across the roof. Stood on the towpath with the statement on my phone thinking the app had glitched.

The static caravan took longer to crack because the shading from the trees is diabolical in winter, but once I added a second MPPT and repositioned two panels, she started generating properly.

What gets me is the psychological shift more than the money. You stop dreading that envelope arriving. The bills go from being something that happens to you into something you're actually in control of.

That's the bit nobody really warns you about when you go off-grid.

The garden office is what tipped us over the edge, actually. Once I'd sized the array properly to cover that as well, the maths just shifted completely. Fogstar cells in the battery bank running the office all day, surplus bleeding back to the grid overnight via the Victron.

The funny thing is my neighbour keeps asking when his bills are going to come down. He's got panels. No storage. Still paying through the nose come November. It really is storage that makes the zero-bill moment possible — generation alone gets you a discount, generation plus storage gets you a statement worth photographing.

@48VGal that fridge thing is exactly right — there needs to be a physical record of the moment.

Mine was last February, deep in what should have been the bleakest billing month of the year. Tiny house, 560Ah of Fogstar lithium, modest 800W of panels, and the statement just said £0.00.

Genuinely sat on the steps outside with a cup of tea just letting it sink in. Thought back to the previous owner of this plot paying £180/month to keep a similar-sized place warm and lit.

The maddening part? February. February. Not July when anyone could manage it. Some careful load-shifting overnight, keeping the Victron Cerbo stats obsessively monitored, and the winter sun did enough.

There's a before and after to this hobby. That statement is the line between them.
