Mine gets absolutely roasting from about June onwards — south-facing with a shed-style roof that basically acts as a radiator. Spent two summers before I sorted it just slowly cooking whilst pretending to work.
What made the biggest difference for me wasn't the cooling itself, it was reducing the heat load before it even became a problem:
- Reflective roof membrane under the felt — cheap and surprisingly effective
- 25mm celotex between the rafters — I know, should've been done at build but better late than never
- External roller blind over the main glazing — cuts direct solar gain massively compared to internal blinds which just trap the heat inside anyway
On the power side, I run a small Midea 9000 BTU portable unit fed from my off-grid setup (Victron Multiplus-II, 10kWh of Fogstar Drift cells). The key insight was that a well-insulated space needs the AC to run in short bursts rather than grinding away all day — my system logs show maybe 1.5–2 hours of actual compressor run time on a hot day once the fabric is sorted.
Also worth trying: pre-cooling first thing in the morning before ambient temps climb. Far more efficient to hold a cold space than drag a hot one back down.
What's everyone else's setup like? Curious whether people with east/west-facing offices have a fundamentally easier time of it, or whether orientation matters less than I think once the insulation is decent. And has anyone gone down the mini-split route rather than portables? Wondering if the efficiency gains justify the install faff.
