Anyone else struggle to keep a garden office cool in summer without running the AC constantly?

Mine gets absolutely roasting from about June onwards — south-facing with a shed-style roof that basically acts as a radiator. Spent two summers before I sorted it just slowly cooking whilst pretending to work.

What made the biggest difference for me wasn't the cooling itself, it was reducing the heat load before it even became a problem:

  • Reflective roof membrane under the felt — cheap and surprisingly effective
  • 25mm celotex between the rafters — I know, should've been done at build but better late than never
  • External roller blind over the main glazing — cuts direct solar gain massively compared to internal blinds which just trap the heat inside anyway

On the power side, I run a small Midea 9000 BTU portable unit fed from my off-grid setup (Victron Multiplus-II, 10kWh of Fogstar Drift cells). The key insight was that a well-insulated space needs the AC to run in short bursts rather than grinding away all day — my system logs show maybe 1.5–2 hours of actual compressor run time on a hot day once the fabric is sorted.

Also worth trying: pre-cooling first thing in the morning before ambient temps climb. Far more efficient to hold a cold space than drag a hot one back down.

What's everyone else's setup like? Curious whether people with east/west-facing offices have a fundamentally easier time of it, or whether orientation matters less than I think once the insulation is decent. And has anyone gone down the mini-split route rather than portables? Wondering if the efficiency gains justify the install faff.

Same issue with my shepherd's hut — south-facing and basically a tin can by July.

Few things that actually helped:

  • Reflective insulation under the roof panel made a massive difference, more than I expected
  • External roller blind over the main window (the inside ones do almost nothing)
  • Small 12v fan running off the solar keeps air moving without hammering the batteries

The fan trick is underrated tbh. Not the same as AC obviously but if you're already off-grid it costs you basically nothing to run and cuts that stuffy dead-air feeling that makes it unbearable.

@LDVCamper what's your insulation situation like? Sometimes the cooking feeling is more about heat stored in the structure than direct solar gain — once the walls heat up it radiates all evening too.

Something nobody's mentioned yet — thermal mass inside the space makes a surprising difference. I added a couple of those large terracotta planters filled with soil along the north wall, and they absorb heat during the day and release it slowly overnight rather than letting the temperature spike dramatically. Cheap and completely passive.

Also worth checking your ventilation is actually creating cross-flow rather than just opening one window and hoping for the best. I cut a vent low on the north-facing wall and another high on the south — stack effect does a decent job pulling cooler air through even without wind.

@AnneWatson shepherd's huts are brutal, agreed. Does yours have any insulation under the floor? That's often overlooked but the ground underneath stays relatively cool all summer and can work in your favour if you use it properly.

@Frank1999 makes a good point on thermal mass — I went a different route though. Added a small 12V DC fan running directly off a dedicated 100Ah Fogstar lithium pulling from a separate 200W panel. Barely dents the battery but keeps air circulating constantly, even overnight.

The real game-changer for me was external solar shading rather than internal blinds. Internal ones block the light but the heat's already through the glass. External timber louvres on the south face dropped the peak temp noticeably — rough to build but worth every hour.

Also worth checking your roof ventilation. Most shed-style roofs have near-zero ridge ventilation and that trapped air is doing you no favours. A simple ridge vent made a measurable difference before I even touched anything else.

@WattAndrea a 12V fan running direct off the panels is genuinely the smartest "free cooling" hack going — mine's been doing the same in the static caravan all summer and it costs me precisely nothing whilst my neighbours are crying at their electric bills! 😄

One thing nobody's tackled yet: roof colour matters enormously — I slapped some white exterior masonry paint on my shed roof two summers ago and the difference was almost comical. Couple that with some cheap reflective foil insulation under the roof boards and you've essentially turned your radiator into something vaguely sensible. Dead easy weekend job, costs maybe £30 from B&Q.
