Running a shepherd's hut here, so I feel this deeply. The problem with small spaces isn't really insulation — it's thermal mass. You heat up fast, cool down just as fast the moment the stove dies back.

A few things that made a genuine difference for me:

Draught-proofing first, everything else second. I lost embarrassing amounts of heat through the door gap and around the flue collar before I sorted those properly. Brush seals on the door, Vitcas fire-rated sealant around the flue — transformed things.

A quality heat-retaining stove rather than a fast-burn one. Switched to a soapstone-lined unit and the radiated warmth after the fire drops right back is noticeably longer. Logs last considerably further into the evening.

Couple this with a small solar-backed setup — I run a 200W Renogy panel feeding a Fogstar Drift LiFePO₄ battery, which powers a low-wattage ceramic panel heater overnight when temperatures really drop. Not a full substitute for wood heat, but it bridges the gap without cracking open the log store at midnight.

The real enemy is the cycle — overfiring to get warm, then letting it die completely. Smaller, more consistent loads burn far more efficiently than chucking a big load on every few hours.


Curious what others are doing — particularly whether anyone's experimented with underfloor insulation on a wheeled structure? My floor is still the weak point and I suspect it's costing me more than anything else at the moment.

@WattEd exactly this — I've been wrestling with the same thing in my hut.

What's made the biggest difference for me is adding a couple of heavy slate tiles on the floor directly in front of the stove. Dead cheap, absorbs heat during the burn and releases it slowly overnight. Not a perfect fix but it takes the edge off that sharp temperature drop around 3am.

Also wondering if anyone's experimented with a small Victron MPPT setup powering a low-wattage panel heater as a backup buffer overnight? I've got solar sorted for my electrics but haven't gone down that route yet for heat supplementation.

The real culprit in my hut is the door end — that's where most of the heat escapes. Heavy curtain across it helped more than I expected.

What's shifted things considerably in my shepherd's hut is a 120-litre thermal store plumbed off a small Charnwood stove via a back boiler, combined with 100mm Celotex across the floor deck before I laid the boarding. The thermal store holds heat long after the fire's out — typically 6–8 hours of residual warmth radiating through a towel-rail-style emitter on the far wall.

Also worth noting: draught-proofing the door threshold made a measurable difference, arguably more than any single insulation upgrade. Small volumes lose heat disproportionately through air infiltration.

If you're considering a heat battery approach, Sunamp's smaller Thermino units are worth a look — particularly useful if you've got solar feeding a Willis heater element to top up the store during daylight.

Stuck a few old cast iron pans under my shepherd's hut bunk as "thermal mass" — my dignity left shortly after, but the overnight temperature held surprisingly well.

More practically: a 12v electric blanket running off my Fogstar lithium bank costs almost nothing and buys you an extra hour or two of "the stove's dead but I'm not frozen" grace period — which in a hut is genuinely the difference between a good night and a miserable one.

@SaltyTrekker the cast iron pan method is genuinely underrated — no shame there.

What I've had reasonable success with on my boat (similar problem — tiny space, big temperature swings) is a soapstone shelf mounted directly above the stove. Holds heat for hours after the fire's out.

For a shepherd's hut specifically though, I'd look at:

  • Phase change material panels behind the wall cladding — pricey but compact
  • A well-insulated water tank tied into a small woodburner back boiler, then radiated out slowly overnight

The back boiler route took me a weekend to sort but genuinely transformed how long the warmth lingered. No more 3am log-loading sessions.

The core shift is thinking less about heating air and more about storing energy in mass or water — same principle as why a Victron battery beats a cable to the grid for stability. Buffer everything.
