Anyone else struggling to keep a timber cabin warm without going overboard on insulation costs?

Got a static van rather than a cabin but the heat loss struggle is very real, so I reckon I can chip in here.

Biggest bang-for-buck thing I did was thermal curtains on every window. Sounds naff but genuinely made a noticeable difference overnight. Cheap as chips compared to re-doing walls.

Second thing — draught exclusion. I was losing so much heat through gaps I hadn't even clocked. Went round with a cheap smoke pen and was genuinely embarrassed by how many leaks I found. Foam tape and draught excluders sorted most of it for about a tenner.

For actual heating I run a small diesel Webasto unit which is very efficient, but I know loads of people on here swear by infrared panels on a timer — apparently they're decent for timber structures specifically because they warm the objects/walls rather than just the air.

If you're dead set on improving the insulation itself without gutting the place, Kingspan or rigid PIR boards fitted internally are your best shout cost-wise. Loses you a few centimetres of floor space but not as brutal as full external cladding jobs.

What's your current setup like? Timber frame, log cabin, or something else? Makes a difference to what's actually worth doing. Also — how are you heating it at the moment? That might change the advice completely.

Would love to hear what others have tried too, especially anyone who's tackled floor insulation on a budget — that's my next headache. 🥶

@DustyCaptain thermal curtains are criminally underrated — did the same in my motorhome and it's basically like adding a free wall.

One thing nobody mentions: draught-proofing beats insulation pound-for-pound every time. A timber cabin leaks heat through gaps you can't even see. Grab a cheap thermal camera (or hire one from a tool library), find the cold spots, then attack them with:

  • Expanding foam on structural gaps
  • Draught excluder tape on door/window frames
  • Silicone bead around skirting boards

Done mine for under £40 total. Heat pumps and extra battery capacity mean nowt if you're essentially heating the outdoors. Sort the envelope first, then throw tech at the problem — same philosophy I use with my Victron setup honestly.

@DustyCaptain @MarineGeoff — seconding the curtains but I'd add: fit a pelmet box above each one. Stops the convection loop where cold air falls off the glass and undercuts the curtain entirely. Made a noticeable difference in my shepherd's hut last winter.

Also worth looking at Thermawrap foil insulation behind the curtains if the windows are single-glazed — cheap roll from any builders' merchant, cut to size, velcro it in at night. Not pretty but effective.

The other thing people overlook in timber builds specifically is floor void ventilation conflicting with underfloor insulation — you can have decent wall and roof U-values but be haemorrhaging heat downward straight into the ground. 100mm Celotex between joists transformed my hut.

Really glad this thread came up — been dealing with this exact issue in my 6x4m timber cabin up in the Cairngorms.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: reflective foil behind your radiators or heat source. Cheap as chips and stops a surprising amount of heat disappearing straight into the wall. Took me about an hour to fit and the difference was noticeable within days.

Also worth checking your floor void if you're on stilts or a raised base. I was losing loads of heat downwards before I stuffed some rigid foam board underneath — draught from below is easy to overlook when you're focused on walls and windows.

@Macca64 the pelmet tip is gold by the way, wish I'd done that sooner. Combined with @DustyCaptain's thermal curtains it makes a proper difference.

Really useful thread this. @AlexYoung76 curious what you've ended up doing in the Cairngorms — that's a brutal environment to heat efficiently.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: draught exclusion around the floor perimeter. In timber cabins especially, there's often a surprising amount of cold air infiltrating at the base where the structure meets the foundation or skirting. A tube of flexible sealant and some draught-excluding foam tape costs next to nothing but can make a noticeable difference before you even think about the walls.

Also worth checking your door threshold seal — they degrade faster than you'd expect and a worn one is basically a letterbox-sized gap at floor level where your heat is quietly escaping all night. Replacement seals are a fiver online.

Small stuff, but stack enough of these marginal gains together and you're spending less on heating fuel which is the whole point really.

@AlexYoung76 Cairngorms?! You're basically field-testing Arctic survival gear at that point. Respect.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet — thermal mass on the interior. Even a few stacked concrete blocks or a reclaimed stone feature wall can absorb daytime heat (solar gain or woodburner) and slowly release it overnight. Obviously not a quick fix but I lined one interior wall of my cabin with reclaimed slate and the overnight temperature drop is noticeably less savage than it used to be.

Also, don't underestimate draught exclusion at floor level — the gap between timber floor panels is where I was haemorrhaging heat for two winters before I bothered to look properly. Cheap expanding foam sorted it.

Insulation doesn't have to mean ripping walls apart. Sometimes it's just... blocking the bleeding obvious holes first.
