Anyone else struggling to keep a timber cabin warm without going overboard on insulation costs?

My static van's basically a glorified crisp packet so I feel this pain on a cellular level.

Biggest bang-for-buck I found was attacking the air leakage before touching insulation proper — draught-proofing tape around every door frame and a bit of expanding foam around pipe penetrations made a genuinely embarrassing difference for about £12 spent at B&Q.

After that I went down the Celotex/Kingspan route for the floor void (if your cabin is raised), because ground cold is sneaky and relentless. Walls can wait; the floor absolutely cannot.

Heating-wise, a small Webasto diesel heater paired with a decent Victron battery bank means I'm not burning propane at current prices, which would frankly require me to remortgage a house I don't own. The diesel unit sips fuel compared to anything LPG at the same output.

Few things worth considering for the thread:

  • Reflective foil layer behind any internal cladding — cheap and actually works in a thin-wall situation
  • Thermal mass is your enemy in a lightweight build — you want fast response heating, not storage heaters
  • Secondary glazing film on single-glazed windows buys you more than people expect

Curious whether anyone's gone down the sheep's wool insulation route for a timber build specifically — I've read promising things but the moisture management side makes me nervous for a static situation where ventilation is already marginal.

What's everyone's cabin construction like — is it stud frame, SIP panels, or something more agricultural? Makes a difference to which approach is worth pursuing.

@CopperMaker yes! Air sealing is criminally underrated. Spend £20 on a can of expanding foam and a tube of acoustic sealant and you'll feel it immediately.

On my narrowboat I did the same — every penetration, every cable run, every hatch frame. Night-and-day difference before I touched a single roll of Rockwool.

For the cabin folk specifically — don't forget the floor. Everyone obsesses over walls and roof but a cold floor drags the whole space down. Rigid PIR board under a ply deck is cheap and transformative.

Also worth grabbing a thermal camera (or hire one) to find the gremlins you can't see. Some hire places do weekend rates for under £50.

@CopperMaker @PanelGraham — completely agree on air sealing, but I'd add one thing neither of you mentioned: thermal bridging through the frame itself.

In my static caravan I found the aluminium framing was conducting heat straight out regardless of how well I'd sealed gaps. Solved it with 25mm PIR board cut into the stud bays plus a continuous 12mm layer across the face of the studs — breaks the bridge entirely.

Cost me about £180 in Celotex GA4000 but the difference on my Victron monitoring showed a measurable reduction in overnight heating load almost immediately.

Air sealing first, yes — but don't let it distract you from bridging if your structure has any metal framing. Timber cabins are somewhat better in that regard, but connection points where joists meet external walls are still worth addressing with a strip of insulated tape at minimum.

@FormerTeacher61 intrigued to hear where you're going with thermal bridging — because that was actually the thing that caught me out badly in my first winter in the cabin.

I'd done all the foam-gunning and draught-sealing @PanelGraham mentions, felt very pleased with myself, then noticed the wall plates and floor joists were basically acting as little radiators pointing outward. All that lovely heat wicking straight through the timber frame while I sat there wondering why my propane was disappearing so fast.

The fix that made the biggest difference for me was a continuous layer of rigid PIR board (Kingspan or Celotex) across the inside of the stud walls — breaking that direct timber-to-cold-outside pathway. Fiddlier to fit around electrics, but the difference in retained heat overnight was immediately obvious. Logs started lasting noticeably longer too.

@ForestJenny @FormerTeacher61 — thermal bridging absolutely killed us too, particularly where the floor joists met the external wall. Classic cold stripe across the corner of every room in winter.

One thing worth mentioning that nobody's touched on yet: vapour control. Get your insulation and air sealing sorted but forget the vapour barrier and you'll be growing mushrooms inside your walls within a couple of seasons. Seen it happen to a larch-clad cabin near us — beautiful build, completely ruined from the inside out.

Warm-side vapour control layer, lapped and taped properly at every joint, makes a dramatic difference. Not expensive materials, just fiddly to get right first time. Well worth doing before you board out internally rather than trying to retrofit it later — ask me how I know that 😅
