Anyone else struggling to keep motivation up during these dark winter months off grid?

Genuinely starting to feel it now. The van's parked up most days because the roads near me have been grim, and with barely 7 hours of usable daylight I'm watching my Victron BMV like a hawk every evening wondering if I've been too liberal with the heating.

I think the hardest part isn't actually the energy management side — I've got that reasonably dialled in with my Fogstar Drift 200Ah and a decent enough tilt on the panels. It's more the psychological bit. You spend all summer feeling smug about free energy and total independence, then November rolls around and suddenly you're rationing the laptop and going to bed at 9pm because there's sod all else to do without draining the batteries.

Anyone else find themselves second-guessing their whole setup this time of year? I keep eyeing up shore power hookups at campsites just for the peace of mind, which feels a bit like cheating to be honest.

A couple of things that have helped me:

  • Keeping a simple log of daily generation vs consumption — weirdly motivating to see small wins
  • Getting outside before midday to actually catch what little sun there is
  • Accepting that winter is genuinely harder and not a personal failure

Curious whether people who've been doing this longer than me (second winter in the van here) ever stop feeling the January dread, or if it just becomes normal? And does anyone actually invest in additional panels specifically for winter angles or is that overkill?

@Thommo9 know the feeling. My static caravan setup really struggles November through January — even with a decent Victron MPPT and 400W on the roof, some days you're getting practically nothing useful.

Few things that helped me mentally:

  • Set a lower "acceptable" SOC floor rather than stressing over hitting 100% daily. 70% in winter is fine if your loads are managed
  • Generator schedule — committing to a fixed run time removes the anxiety of watching the BMV constantly
  • Fog/frost on panels — easy win, just keep them clean

Honestly though, winter off-grid is just a different discipline to summer. You stop optimising and start managing. Once I accepted that, it stopped feeling like failure and more like just... the season.

It does get easier once you've been through a full cycle and know what your system actually handles.

@Thommo9 genuinely curious — have you looked at supplementing with a small wind turbine for the winter months? I've been tempted myself for the tiny house build. Solar just feels completely pointless some weeks.

Also wondering whether anyone's found a good threshold for when to just accept defeat and run a generator rather than stressing over every watt? I've got a Victron MultiPlus and I know I could set up automated grid/genny charging but I haven't pulled the trigger on configuring it properly yet.

Does the constant monitoring actually help or does it just make the anxiety worse? Sometimes I wonder if I'd be better off just setting alerts and stepping away from the app entirely.

@Thommo9 got a solar setup on both the boat and the static — winter is genuinely grim, no sugarcoating it. Seven hours of usable daylight is optimistic depending where you are, and half of that you're getting maybe 20% of rated output through the cloud cover anyway.

What's your current array size and battery capacity? Because sometimes the issue isn't motivation, it's that the system was never properly sized for winter in the first place and you're just fighting a losing battle every day.

@MultiPlusGeek — wind can help but it's another thing to maintain and depends heavily on location. Not always the silver bullet people reckon it is.

Honest answer: generator on a timer, get the batteries topped up, stop staring at the BMV constantly. That last bit will do more for your mental state than anything else.

@Thommo9 mate, I've been there — staring at the Victron BMV like it owes me money while the State of Charge ticks down to somewhere that makes your stomach drop.

Honestly, the thing that saved my sanity in Kangoo last winter was reframing the whole thing. Low solar days became "permission to do all the things that don't need power" — insulating better, reorganising the van, learning stuff offline.

Also practically speaking: I chucked a Fogstar 100Ah lithium in and the usable capacity versus a lead-acid made the psychological difference alone. Getting 95% out rather than 50% feels like cheating.

The dark months are basically off-grid hard mode. Pass the level and April sunshine hits different — you'll appreciate every single watt like it's a gift. 🌞

Hang in there, the solstice is already behind us.
