Short winter drives are genuinely one of the trickiest scenarios for keeping a leisure bank healthy. The alternator barely gets going before you've arrived, and if you're running a compressor fridge plus heating controller simultaneously, you're often taking from the battery rather than putting anything back.
My setup runs a Victron Orion-Tr Smart 30A DC-DC charger rather than a direct split-charge relay, and even that struggles to make meaningful inroads on a 20-minute school-run-length hop. The Orion needs a few minutes just to ramp up properly, so you're realistically losing the first 5 minutes of any short drive to inefficiency.
A few things that have genuinely helped me:
- Prioritising mains hookup whenever possible in winter, even for an overnight on the drive
- Setting the Orion's engine detection voltage slightly lower so it triggers faster off the alternator
- Keeping an eye on battery state via the Victron app and only running high-draw items when I know a longer drive is coming
I've also heard good things about people fitting higher-capacity alternators or adding a small solar panel (even 100W does something on a bright winter day), but I haven't gone down that route myself yet.
The real issue is that leisure batteries — mine are Fogstar Drift lithium cells — don't lie. The SOC readout makes it very obvious when short-trip driving just isn't cutting it.
Anyone else finding DC-DC chargers help more than old-school VSR setups in this situation? And has anyone actually seen worthwhile alternator output on drives under 30 minutes in December? Curious what others are experiencing.
