Anyone else struggling to keep the leisure battery topped up on short winter drives?

Short winter drives are genuinely one of the trickiest scenarios for keeping a leisure bank healthy. The alternator barely gets going before you've arrived, and if you're running a compressor fridge plus heating controller simultaneously, you're often taking from the battery rather than putting anything back.

My setup runs a Victron Orion-Tr Smart 30A DC-DC charger rather than a direct split-charge relay, and even that struggles to make meaningful inroads on a 20-minute school-run-length hop. The Orion needs a few minutes just to ramp up properly, so you're realistically losing the first 5 minutes of any short drive to inefficiency.

A few things that have genuinely helped me:

  • Prioritising mains hookup whenever possible in winter, even for an overnight on the drive
  • Setting the Orion's engine detection voltage slightly lower so it triggers faster off the alternator
  • Keeping an eye on battery state via the Victron app and only running high-draw items when I know a longer drive is coming

I've also heard good things about people fitting higher-capacity alternators or adding a small solar panel (even 100W does something on a bright winter day), but I haven't gone down that route myself yet.

The real issue is that leisure batteries — mine are Fogstar Drift lithium cells — don't lie. The SOC readout makes it very obvious when short-trip driving just isn't cutting it.

Anyone else finding DC-DC chargers help more than old-school VSR setups in this situation? And has anyone actually seen worthwhile alternator output on drives under 30 minutes in December? Curious what others are experiencing.

@Turbo absolutely feel this. The issue that catches most people out is that split charge relays (and even VSRs) have a voltage threshold that the alternator often won't sustain long enough on a 20-minute run to properly trigger bulk charging.

Worth looking at a DC-DC charger like a Victron Orion if you haven't already — they actively step up the charge current regardless of how brief the drive is, and they'll properly condition the battery rather than just trickling in whatever the alternator manages to push across.

The compressor fridge running overnight beforehand makes it so much worse too — you're starting from a deeper deficit each morning.

What's your current setup — split charge, VSR, or something else? Knowing that might help narrow down where you're losing the battle. 🔋

Something nobody's mentioned yet — your alternator's internal regulator is often the real culprit here. Most factory alternators will drop to float voltage (13.8V-ish) within minutes of starting, especially once the starter battery reads "satisfied." If you're charging lithium leisure batteries through a standard B2B, at least you're forcing bulk charge for the full journey duration.

I fitted a Victron Orion-Tr Smart 30A isolated DC-DC charger last spring specifically for this reason. Even a 20-minute run now pushes 350-400Wh into my Fogstar Drift 100Ah. Without it, the same drive was barely moving the needle.

Worth checking: what's actually sitting between your alternator and leisure bank? A direct split-charge relay in winter conditions is essentially decorative given the voltage differential issue.

Went through exactly this last winter running the cabin-on-wheels setup. The thing that genuinely changed the game for me was fitting a Victron Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger. Forget relying on a split charge relay — on a 20-minute school run the relay barely has time to realise the engine's running before you've switched off.

The Orion actually manages the charge properly, and because it isolates your leisure bank from the starter battery, you're not just passively sipping whatever voltage drifts over. Paired with a modest Fogstar LiFePO4 bank, even those frustrating stop-start December commutes have kept me above 80%.

@PennineVanLifer raises a fair point about the alternator reg — worth checking your vehicle's smart alternator behaviour before assuming any DC-DC will work straight out the box.

Worth adding a layer @Turbo hadn't mentioned — your B2B charger profile matters enormously here. Running a Sterling Pro Batt Ultra into Fogstar Drift lithium, I found that aggressive charge curves extract meaningfully more usable energy from a ten-minute run than any basic VSR ever managed.

The real story though: I logged actual input data across a Scottish winter, short 4-8 mile hops, and the difference between a well-configured B2B versus a basic split-charge relay was roughly 3x the amp-hours recovered per journey.

What @PennineVanLifer hints at regarding alternator regulation is real — pre-2015 vehicles with external regulators respond far better to aggressive charge demands than modern smart alternators, which need the B2B to ramp current carefully or they'll fault out entirely.

Great thread. One thing I'd add on top of what @TorJake and @PennineVanLifer have covered — don't underestimate the value of pre-conditioning your leisure bank before a short run. If you're hooked up to hook-up overnight or have even a modest solar contribution during the day, make sure your battery's going into that drive as full as possible. A short alternator charge into an already-healthy battery is far less painful than trying to drag up a depleted one.

Also worth checking your cable sizing and fuse ratings between the vehicles — undersized cabling is surprisingly common and will throttle whatever your B2B is trying to do, regardless of how well-specced the charger itself is. A volt drop test on a cold morning can be quite revealing! 🙂
