Anyone else using cheap Chinese MPPT controllers or is it false economy?

Been through this exact dilemma on the boat. Started out with a Renogy Rover 40A and honestly it was fine for about 18 months, then the comms port died and the efficiency figures started looking dodgy on the app. Replaced it with a Victron SmartSolar and the difference in charge behaviour was immediately obvious — especially on low-light mornings on the cut where you're getting patchy cloud cover all day.

The cheap units work, but I reckon you lose more than you think:

  • Poor MPPT tracking in variable light (and we get a lot of that here, let's be honest)
  • No proper integration if you're running a Victron ecosystem
  • Warranty support is basically non-existent
  • Efficiency claims on the spec sheet are... optimistic

That said, I've seen people on here running EPever units for years without issue, so it's not black and white.

My rough take: if you're running a small system — say under 400W — a decent mid-range controller probably won't hurt you much. Once you're putting serious solar on the roof and relying on it full-time, the Victron premium starts making sense pretty quickly. The SmartSolar 100/30 I've got now just works, all the time, no faff.

Curious whether anyone's done back-to-back efficiency testing though — actual numbers rather than just vibes. Anyone running a Fogstar setup with a non-Victron controller managing to get decent SOC accuracy?

@BenJohnson95 the comms port dying is really common with the Renogy units - had exactly the same on mine after about 14 months. Switched to a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 and the difference in tracking efficiency was genuinely noticeable, particularly on those grey UK winter days when every watt counts.

That said, I've got a cheap EPever Tracer running my shed setup for three years now with zero issues. I think the honest answer is it depends entirely on what you're protecting. For the boat where you're relying on it for safety-critical loads, I'd spend the money. For a secondary system where failure just means mild inconvenience? The budget units can be decent value.

The false economy argument only really stacks up if you're replacing them repeatedly.

@BenJohnson95 been down this exact rabbit hole on my boat — ran a dodgy no-name 30A for two seasons before realising my "savings" had quietly cooked a battery bank that cost three times as much to replace 🙃

The dirty secret is cheap MPPTs often lie about their own efficiency figures, so you're not even getting what's on the tin. Victron SmartSolar is the obvious step up but if budget is tight, the EPever Tracer series hits a decent middle ground — actual proper comms, reasonable tracking accuracy, and you're not gambling your expensive Fogstar lithiums on firmware written on a Friday afternoon.

The efficiency "looking dodgy" is the tell. Most of these units overstate their own tracking performance and you'd never know without independent logging. I ran a cheap EPever unit for two years thinking it was fine until I put a Victron SmartShunt in and realised I was losing probably 8-12% versus what the controller claimed.

Switched to a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 and the difference was measurable within the first week — actual data, not just vibes.

The maths isn't complicated: if a cheap unit costs you £60 less upfront but underperforms by even 5% over a 5-year lifespan, you've lost considerably more than £60 in usable capacity. On a boat where your battery bank is already compromised by temperature swings, you really can't afford to chuck away harvest efficiency.

False economy for most people, frankly.

@BenJohnson95 the efficiency degradation is what finally pushed me off the cheap units on my narrowboat. What I never see mentioned is the thermal throttling — these controllers quietly back off harvest on warm days and you'd never know without logging. Swapped to a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 two years ago and the difference in cloudy UK conditions specifically is night and day; Victron's absorption algorithm handles our grey diffuse light far better than the basic PWM-ish MPPT implementations you get in budget units. The Bluetooth integration with VictronConnect also means I can actually see what's happening rather than guessing. Yes it's £150 vs £40 — but on a boat where your battery bank is your lifeline through a February mooring, that delta feels like nothing.
