Anyone else using cheap Chinese PWM controllers or is it false economy?

Had a couple of these knock-off PWM units on my static caravan setup for about two years now — the kind you'd find on Amazon for £15 with a brand name that changes every few months. Honestly? Mixed results.

The first one lasted about eight months before it started giving wildly inaccurate state-of-charge readings. Replaced it, the second one is still going but I wouldn't trust it to protect my Fogstar batteries properly. No low-voltage disconnect worth relying on.

The bigger issue for me is that I'm trying to add EV charging capability to the site eventually, and I need to actually trust my system. A dodgy controller that's quietly cooking your batteries or letting them discharge too deep is a false economy when you're replacing a £300+ battery bank.

I've been looking at proper MPPT now — even the budget Victron BlueSolar range feels like night and day in terms of data and reliability, though obviously the price reflects that.

That said, I wonder if the cheap PWM units are fine for very basic, low-stakes setups? Running a few lights and a 12V fridge on a boat in summer, maybe the risk calculus is different to someone running a more complex off-grid system year-round.

  • Anyone running these Chinese controllers long-term with decent results?
  • What's your threshold before you decide it's worth spending proper money?
  • Are there any budget brands that are actually consistent quality, or is it genuinely a lottery?

Curious whether people's mileage varies based on what they're powering.

I ran a couple of the £12-15 units on my shed setup for about 18 months. The honest verdict: the PWM regulation itself was actually decent, but the temperature compensation was basically fiction — the stated specs bore no resemblance to reality once you tested them properly.

What killed mine wasn't the regulation circuit, it was the dodgy terminal blocks. The screw threads stripped and I started getting intermittent connections, which is where the real danger lies with cheap units.

For a low-stakes secondary system I'd use them again. But on my main cabin bank with proper AGMs? I wouldn't risk it. The £15 saving feels less clever when you're replacing batteries prematurely because your charging profile's all over the place.

Right so I went exactly this route when I was first setting up my shepherd's hut — grabbed a couple of dodgy PWM units off eBay, couldn't tell you the brand because it changed three times on the listing alone 😅

Worked fine for about eight months then one just... stopped. No drama, no fire (thank god), just silently gave up one February morning when I really needed it.

Switched to a proper Victron BlueSolar MPPT and honestly the efficiency difference alone started paying it back within a season — especially with the Fogstar lithium I'd fitted.

The £15 units can work but they're essentially consumables. If your setup is temporary or genuinely experimental, crack on. But if you're relying on it for anything meaningful — garden office, actual living space — the maths changes pretty quickly.

That said, if you're running a tiny panel array just topping up a leisure battery, the risk/reward maths does look different — just make sure you've got a proper fuse between it and the battery, which shockingly half these cheap units don't remind you about in their "manual" (two photocopied pages of Mandarin).

@HMK_Sparks two years is genuinely impressive — I'd treat it like borrowed time and budget for an upgrade before it decides otherwise.

@CornishNomad 3am is genuinely when all budget electronics decide it's time to have an existential crisis, mine included — swapped the last sketchy PWM out for a proper Victron SmartSolar MPPT and the only drama I've had since is realising how much efficiency I was haemorrhaging with PWM in the first place, which is arguably the more expensive lesson.
