Spent three years learning this lesson the hard way in my Transit conversion, so here's my honest take.

Started with a £18 PWM unit from Amazon — can't even remember the brand, some string of random letters. Worked fine for about four months, then started reading wildly incorrect voltages and essentially cooked one of my AGM batteries by overcharging it. Battery was only a year old.

Switched to a Victron SmartSolar MPPT and genuinely haven't thought about my charge controller since. That's the thing people miss — it's not just efficiency gains (though the MPPT advantage in UK winters is significant when you're already starved for solar), it's the peace of mind and the Bluetooth monitoring. Knowing exactly what's happening with your system is worth a lot when you're parked up in a Scottish lay-by in February.

The maths people use to justify cheap PWM controllers never accounts for:

  • The battery you'll kill when it misbehaves
  • The solar harvest you're losing to inefficiency
  • The time spent fault-finding

That said — I do think there's a middle ground. Renogy's own-brand controllers are decent entry-level kit for very small systems, like a basic leisure van with minimal loads. Just don't go no-name.

Curious whether anyone's had better luck with the EPEVER range? I've seen them recommended a fair bit on here and the specs look reasonable on paper. Would genuinely consider one for a secondary small panel setup rather than throwing another Victron at it.

What's everyone's threshold before they consider PWM acceptable vs. proper MPPT?

Curious what killed the cheap unit in the end — thermal failure or just dodgy regulation? I ask because on my narrowboat I ran a no-name PWM for about 18 months before noticing my batteries were consistently undercharged. Swapped to a Victron BlueSolar MPPT and the difference in charge quality was immediately obvious, even on the same panels.

The maths matters too:

  • PWM wastes panel voltage above battery voltage
  • MPPT harvests that difference as extra current
  • In UK winters with low sun angles, that efficiency gap really bites

For anyone reading this on a tight budget, Renogy do a decent entry-level MPPT that won't break the bank and at least gives you proper regulation.

@CrispyMechanic similar story with my first van build — went through two no-name PWMs before I finally caved and got a Victron SmartSolar. Night and day difference, not just in performance but in the actual data you get through the app.

The thing people miss with PWM vs MPPT isn't just the efficiency argument — it's that a decent MPPT controller tells you what's happening. When my Fogstar lithium pack wasn't charging properly last winter, I diagnosed it in minutes because Victron logs everything.

That said, I wouldn't completely write off PWM for very small setups. Running a basic 12V system with a single 100W panel and a flooded lead-acid? Probably fine. But the moment you're investing in lithium cells, don't insult them with a £18 controller.

Hey @CrispyMechanic, great thread! I had almost identical experience with my narrowboat setup — bought three different cheap PWMs over about 18 months before my husband finally said "just buy the proper thing."

The one thing I'd add that nobody mentions enough: the dodgy ones can actually damage your batteries over time through improper charging profiles, so you're not just risking the controller itself. I lost a fairly decent AGM bank because the bulk/absorption stages were all over the place. Didn't realise until too late.

@RayPowell curious which brand you eventually went with? I ended up on a Victron and honestly wish I'd just done it from the start — would've been cheaper overall. Sometimes "budget" ends up being the most expensive option in the long run! 😅

@CrispyMechanic worth noting the actual technical reason PWM controllers are worse isn't just reliability — it's that they can't properly match panel voltage to battery voltage. MPPT extracts significantly more usable power from the same panels, especially in low light. On my boat I switched to a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 and saw genuine measurable gains on cloudy days, which is basically every day in the UK.

The cheap units also tend to lie about their current ratings. A "30A" no-name PWM is rarely actually 30A continuous without thermal throttling.

False economy? Almost certainly yes, unless your array is tiny and your expectations are very low.

@HollyBaker is right about the technical side but worth being even more precise — PWM controllers force your panel to operate at battery voltage, not panel Vmp. On a 36-cell panel (Vmp ~18V) into a 12V battery, you're throwing away a significant chunk of available power by design, not just inefficiency losses.

MPPT actually tracks the panel's maximum power point continuously. On my narrowboat I swapped a 20A PWM for a Victron SmartSolar 75/15 and saw measurable gains even on the same 100W panel — especially in low light where the voltage differential matters most.

The cheap PWM isn't just unreliable, it's fundamentally the wrong topology for most modern panels. False economy twice over.
