Anyone else using cheap Chinese PWM controllers or is it just me cutting corners?

Been running a cheap PWM unit from Amazon for about 14 months now — one of those unbranded 30A jobs that cost me £18. Honestly expected it to die within a few weeks but it's still going.

That said, I'm starting to wonder if I'm false-economising. My panels are 24V nominal and I know MPPT would squeeze significantly more out of them, especially through our grim British winters when every watt counts. The PWM is essentially throwing away potential harvest during low-light conditions, which is... most of the year here.

The thing that's making me reconsider is the EV charging side of my setup. I'm trying to build enough stored capacity to top up a small EV overnight, and the inefficiency is starting to feel like a real bottleneck. A Victron SmartSolar 100/30 would obviously be the sensible upgrade — but that's £120+ versus £18.

A few questions for anyone who's been down this road:

  • Did you notice an actual measurable difference when you switched from PWM to MPPT, or is it mostly theoretical gains on paper?
  • Has anyone had one of these cheap controllers fail in a way that damaged batteries? That's my bigger concern — I'm using Fogstar Drift cells and wouldn't want a dodgy controller cooking them
  • Is there a middle ground — decent MPPT that isn't Victron money?

Genuinely curious whether most people here started with budget kit and upgraded, or went quality from the start and saved themselves the hassle.

@OakSoul the £18 ones are basically a lottery aren't they. I ran one for about 8 months on my garden office setup before it started misreporting battery voltage — showing 13.8v when my Victron BMV was reading 12.1v. Not dangerous exactly but you lose all trust in the numbers.

Swapped it for a Victron BlueSolar PWM-Pro and honestly it's a different world — Bluetooth monitoring alone is worth it.

That said, if your panels are small and loads are simple, cheap PWM probably fine. Where it gets sketchy is if you're relying on it for accurate state-of-charge or LFP charging profiles — those no-name units rarely get the absorption/float voltages right out of the box.

@OakSoul worth understanding why some survive and some don't — it usually comes down to how hard you're actually loading them.

That 30A rating is almost certainly peak, not continuous. I'd derate by 25–30% minimum on any unbranded unit. Running mine at 60–70% capacity meant it lasted considerably longer than expected before I eventually swapped it for a Victron BlueSolar.

The real hidden cost with PWM vs MPPT isn't reliability — it's the efficiency loss, particularly on cold mornings when panel Voc is elevated. On my shepherds hut array I was leaving roughly 15–20% on the table during winter months.

If you're on a tight budget, a Renogy Wanderer is a reasonable middle ground — at least it has proper thermal protection and actual documentation. The completely unbranded stuff is a gamble on whether the BOM matches what's advertised.

@OakSoul ran a similar unit on my shepherd's hut build for about six months before swapping it out. The thing worked but I was losing a noticeable chunk of potential harvest — PWM just can't match MPPT when your panels aren't perfectly matched to your battery voltage.

Switched to a Victron 75/15 and the difference on cloudy days especially was immediately obvious. Not exactly "budget" but they hold their value if you ever sell up.

The £18 units seem to survive when:

  • They're running well under their rated current
  • Ambient temps stay reasonable
  • You're not doing daily deep cycles

Basically the less you ask of them, the longer they last. Whether that's a good use of even £18 is debatable when a decent MPPT isn't that far up the price ladder anymore.

@BordersExplorer is onto something important there. The other factor nobody mentions is ambient temperature — these cheap units have absolutely zero thermal management worth speaking of. I ran a no-name 20A PWM on my narrowboat for nearly a year and it was fine until a hot July when I had it in a poorly ventilated locker. Thermal shutdown city.

If you're going to stick with budget PWM rather than stepping up to something like a Victron BlueSolar MPPT, at minimum:

  • Derate it significantly — treat a 30A unit as a 15-20A unit
  • Mount it somewhere with actual airflow
  • Check the terminal connections monthly — cheap PCB-mounted terminals are notorious for loosening

The £18 gamble can work, but you're essentially engineering around its limitations rather than the controller doing its job properly.
