Anyone else using cheap eBay PWM controllers or is it false economy?

Been through this exact debate with both my shepherd's hut and the motorhome builds.

Short answer — false economy, at least in my experience.

Burned through two cheap PWM units in the hut before switching to a proper Victron SmartSolar MPPT. The eBay ones had dodgy amp readings, one got warm enough to worry me, and neither actually matched what they claimed on the tin. Lost probably 20-30% efficiency compared to what I'm seeing now.

The thing is, your panels and batteries are the expensive bits. Sticking a £12 controller in between them feels like buying decent tyres then fitting them with poundshop valves.

That said — PWM vs MPPT matters here too. If your panel voltage closely matches your battery bank anyway, PWM loses less. Some folk run small 12V systems where it's genuinely fine. But the cheap eBay part is still the gamble regardless of topology.

If budget's tight, I'd say stretch to a Renogy Wanderer or similar rather than the no-brand stuff. At least there's some accountability there.

Curious whether anyone's had long-term luck with the unbranded ones — maybe I just got unlucky twice? What wattage systems are we talking for those who've stuck with PWM?

@FrostySocket Cheers for sharing that — completely backs up what I found with my narrowboat setup. The one thing I'd add that nobody mentions: the cheap ones often have wildly inaccurate state-of-charge displays. Mine was showing 80% when the batteries were genuinely struggling. Took me ages to work out why my leisure batteries were degrading so fast — the controller was letting them get hammered whilst cheerfully claiming everything was fine.

Spent about £18 on two dud units before caving and buying a Victron. The Victron's been faultless for three years now. Sometimes the maths just does itself, doesn't it.

That said, if anyone's running a genuinely tiny system — say a single panel trickle-charging a shed battery — the cheap ones are probably fine for that limited use case.

There's a moment in every van build where you stand in a car park at dusk, laptop open, comparing a £12 PWM controller on eBay with a £45 Victron BlueSolar, and you think surely they do the same job.

Reader, they do not.

Mine lasted one particularly ambitious wild camping trip in Wales — damp got into the terminals and that was that. Three days without charging, full battery panic, the whole drama.

The real hidden cost nobody mentions is the wiring time. Every time you rip out a failed unit, you're redoing crimps, checking your busbars, second-guessing everything else in the circuit. That's hours, not minutes.

MPPT is genuinely worth the jump if your panel array is any size at all. Fogstar cells plus a Victron controller is where I landed, and I've not touched it since.

Had a cheap PWM on my garden office build — lasted about 14 months before it started reading voltages completely wrong. Panels were barely charging the battery even on decent days and I couldn't figure out why for weeks. Turned out the controller was lying to me the whole time.

Swapped to a Victron SmartSolar and honestly the difference in just knowing what's actually happening is worth the price alone. The app visibility changed everything for me — especially useful for the cabin where I'm not always on site.

@FrostySocket the false economy point is real. The cheap unit cost me roughly the same again in lost charging cycles on a Fogstar battery I'd rather not have stressed unnecessarily.

Buy once, cry once basically applies here.

Worth mentioning something nobody's touched on yet — the hidden cost isn't just the replacement unit itself, it's what happens between failure and replacement. @Dizzy70 your dodgy voltage readings ring a bell; I had a cheap unit doing similar and it was quietly undercharging my leisure battery for weeks before I cottoned on. By the time I realised, the battery was sulphated beyond recovery. Suddenly that £12 controller had cost me a £180 battery.

If budget is genuinely tight, I'd say buy one decent MPPT secondhand off eBay rather than two new cheap PWMs. Victron SmartSolar units pop up regularly and they're practically indestructible. The Bluetooth monitoring alone is worth it — you can actually see what your system's doing rather than just hoping for the best.
