Anyone else using old washing machine motors for a DIY wind turbine?

Been down this rabbit hole for about 18 months now and honestly it's one of the more satisfying projects I've tackled.

I'm running a rewound induction motor from an old Hotpoint (rescued from the tip) as a permanent magnet alternator. Rewinding is the tricky bit — you need to strip the original windings and wind new coils around neodymium magnets that you bond onto the rotor. Plenty of YouTube tutorials but they vary massively in quality, so be selective.

A few things I've learned the hard way:

  • Cut-in speed matters enormously — get your pole count wrong and you'll need 40mph gusts before it generates anything useful
  • Rectification — I'm using a simple 3-phase bridge rectifier before it hits my Victron MPPT. Works surprisingly well
  • Blade balance is absolutely critical. Even slight imbalance will eventually shake your tower apart or wreck the bearings
  • Cogging torque — some motors have terrible cogging which kills performance in low winds. Worth testing before you commit hours of rewinding time

Output is modest — maybe 200-300W in a decent Welsh blow — but for zero outlay on the alternator itself it's hard to argue with.

Anyone else experimented with different motor sizes? I'm wondering whether a bigger drum motor from a commercial washer would be worth chasing down. Also curious whether anyone's tried axial flux builds versus this radial approach — seems like axial flux is theoretically cleaner but the fabrication complexity is considerably higher.

What are your setups like? Tower height, blade diameter, that sort of thing. Always keen to compare notes.

@Taffy62 that's a proper project that. I've been tempted myself — got an old Bosch drum motor sat in the garage doing nothing.

Few questions if you don't mind:

  • What pole count did you end up with after rewinding?
  • Are you rectifying straight to a battery bank or going through a charge controller?
  • What cut-in wind speed are you seeing?

Main thing I'd be curious about is the cogging on these motors — induction motors can be stubborn to get spinning at low wind. Some folk add a small neodymium magnet rotor swap but that's basically a whole other project at that point.

Running a Victron SmartShunt so I'd be able to monitor whatever goes in properly. Just not sure my location is worth it — trees on three sides of my pitch aren't ideal 😄

@Taffy62 oh this is exactly my kind of chaos 😄 I've been eyeing up the dead Indesit in my neighbour's skip for weeks now wondering the same thing!

Quick question — what rectifier setup are you running between the alternator output and your batteries? I've got a Victron SmartShunt on my narrowboat system and I'm paranoid about dumping weird AC spikes into it.

Also did you do the rewinding yourself or find someone local? I've seen a few tutorials but they look properly fiddly.

@WonkyMender that Bosch motor is worth hanging onto — from what I've read the older German-made ones have tighter tolerances on the stator which apparently helps with low-wind performance. Could be wrong though!

@PanelKate grab that Indesit before the scrap van does, I lost a perfectly good motor to one of those blighters last spring and still not over it 😤

Been meaning to do exactly this for my cabin setup but somehow ended up buying a Renogy kit instead like a coward — the rewinding rabbit hole terrified me if I'm honest. @Taffy62 what rectifier are you dumping into, straight to a Victron MPPT or something more bodged together? Asking for a friend (the friend is me, I have no idea what I'm doing).

@Taffy62 solid work on the rewound Hotpoint — permanent magnet conversion is the critical step most people underestimate. The stock induction motor needs serious demagnetisation and rewind work to produce usable AC output at low RPM.

Few technical points worth flagging for anyone attempting this:

  • Cut-in speed is everything. Aim for under 150 RPM if possible, otherwise your turbine sits idle in anything below a decent breeze
  • Star vs delta winding — star configuration gives you higher voltage at lower RPM, which suits off-grid battery charging better than delta in most UK wind conditions
  • Rectification — three-phase bridge rectifier before your MPPT controller, not a simple diode dump

I'm running a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 on my EV charging setup and it handles variable wind input reasonably well when paired with a decent dump load controller to protect the battery bank.

What blade diameter are you running @Taffy62?
