Running a 100Ah Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 in my cabin setup and I've been eyeing up a pair of 200W panels going cheap on Facebook Marketplace — the maths technically works out at 400W total, but my Victron SmartSolar 100/30 is only rated for 400W peak on 12V so I'm right on the bleeding edge.
The question is: what actually happens if I nudge slightly over that figure in real-world conditions? I know the 100/30 refers to 100V open-circuit max and 30A max charge current, and the MPPT will simply throttle output amps to protect itself — so the current side feels manageable. But I'm less clear on whether brief voltage spikes on a cold morning could nudge the Voc over 100V and cause actual damage.
The panels in question are rated:
- Voc: 24.3V each
- Isc: 8.9A each
- Wattage: 200W each
Planning to wire them in series (48.6V combined Voc), so voltage headroom looks fine. Watts are the grey area.
Has anyone deliberately run oversized arrays on a Victron MPPT and lived to tell the tale, or is this the kind of optimism that ends with a very expensive paperweight? Victron's own docs seem to imply it's fine as long as you respect the voltage limits, but I'd rather hear from someone who's actually done it rather than trust my own wishful reading of a PDF.
