Been running a similar setup in my shepherd's hut and this question is something I wrestled with for ages.

The short answer is that Victron BMV-712 seems to be the go-to recommendation you'll see everywhere, and honestly for good reason — the Bluetooth monitoring alone is worth it when you're trudging across a field in the dark to check on things.

That said, I'm curious whether anyone's had specific experience pairing one with the EcoWorthy BMS in particular. My understanding is the BMV reads from a shunt rather than communicating directly with the BMS, so in theory it should work with pretty much anything — but I've heard the EcoWorthy BMS can sometimes send conflicting SOC readings which causes confusion when you're looking at two different figures.

A few questions I'd throw out there:

  • Are people generally trusting the BMS SOC or the BMV SOC when they disagree?
  • Is it worth the extra cost doing a full Victron ecosystem (SmartShunt into a Cerbo GX) or overkill for a single 48v battery?
  • Has anyone tried one of the cheaper Renogy shunt monitors with EcoWorthy? Wondering if that's a false economy

Planning to power a small garden office alongside the hut eventually so I want monitoring I can actually rely on rather than just ballpark figures. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who's actually running this specific battery rather than just general advice about LiFePO4 — there seem to be some quirks with the EcoWorthy units specifically.

@NicolaKing85 is right that the BMV-712 is the standard recommendation, but worth flagging a couple of things specific to that EcoWorthy battery.

Those batteries have an internal BMS that communicates via their own app, so you're essentially getting two state-of-charge readings that may disagree. The BMV-712 measures current flow (coulomb counting) and is generally more accurate for day-to-day monitoring, but the BMS's own SoC figure is what actually governs charge/discharge cutoffs.

On my narrowboat I run a BMV-712 alongside Victron kit and the two figures occasionally diverge after partial cycles — totally normal.

Make sure you set the battery capacity correctly in the BMV setup (314Ah) and dial in the Peukert exponent for LiFePO4 (typically 1.05). Also synchronise at full charge regularly. Without correct setup, any monitor will drift badly.

Good points already made above. One thing worth adding from my boat install experience: the BMV-712's Bluetooth is genuinely useful but the real value is setting your charge efficiency factor and Peukert exponent correctly for LiFePO4 — the defaults are calibrated for lead-acid and will give you wildly inaccurate readings if left unchanged.

For a 314Ah LiFePO4, set:

  • Charge efficiency: 99%
  • Peukert exponent: 1.05

Also make sure your shunt is on the negative terminal, with every load and charge source on the battery side of it — any stray connections will throw your synchronisation completely off. Learned that the hard way with my Fogstar cells.

@NicolaKing85 shepherds hut gang represent 🙌 — mine's running a Fogstar Drift 48V with the BMV-712 and the synchronisation is the bit nobody warns you about: nail your charge efficiency factor and peukert exponent settings or the SOC readout becomes about as reliable as a British summer.

Good thread. One thing nobody's mentioned yet — if you're running the EcoWorthy BMS that comes built into that battery, double-check what current shunt rating you actually need before ordering the BMV-712. The 500A shunt is overkill for most hut setups and you can save a few quid going with the 100A version if your loads are modest.

Also worth knowing the BMV-712 plays nicely with Victron's GX devices if you ever expand — my shepherd's hut started with just the monitor and I later added a Cerbo GX without needing to rewire anything. Future-proofing matters more than people realise when you're building incrementally on a budget.

@ValleyChild curious what synchronisation issues you hit with the Fogstar Drift — I'm considering one as a second bank.
