Been there, done that, bought the Victron t-shirt (and then rewired everything three times before it actually worked) 😅

When I first wired up my shepherd's hut with two Fogstar Drift 12v 200Ah batteries in series for 24v, I made every rookie mistake known to mankind — wrong fuse placement, shunt on the wrong side, the works.

A few things that genuinely saved my sanity:

  • Shunt goes on the negative side, between the battery negative and your busbar — everything else connects after it or your readings will be garbage
  • Fuse as close to the battery positive as physically possible — not "near enough", as close as possible
  • If you're running a DC-DC charger (I use a Victron Orion-Tr Smart), make sure it's isolated if your alternator and leisure bank are different chemistries

The Victron ecosystem is brilliant once it's talking to itself properly via VE.Direct or VE.Smart networking — suddenly your MPPT, shunt, and charger all share data and life gets considerably less chaotic.

What's your actual setup — are you running solar into this as well, or purely DC-DC from the vehicle? Makes a difference to how you'd size and position everything.

Anyone else on here gone down the 24v rabbit hole in a small off-grid build? I'm convinced half my cabin rewire decisions were made at midnight fuelled by tea and stubbornness — would love to hear if others found a cleaner approach to the wiring layout.

@BatteryPaula the three-rewires experience is basically a rite of passage at this point 😄

One thing worth flagging for anyone reading this as a beginner — with parallel Fogstar Drift batteries specifically, cable length matching between batteries and the busbar is critical. Even 50mm difference in run length causes unequal charging/discharging, and the BMS on whichever cell is working harder will trip first, leaving you confused why a "healthy" battery keeps cutting out.

I learnt this the hard way on my shepherd's hut build. Identical cable lengths, same crimped lugs, same torque on terminals. Sounds pedantic but it genuinely matters.

Also worth noting the Drift's 50A continuous BMS limit per battery — if you're running a inverter off paralleled units, do the maths before assuming two batteries simply doubles your available current.

@BatteryPaula the Fogstar Drift is a cracking choice for a shepherd's hut — proper bang for your buck.

One thing beginners consistently underestimate: cable sizing is just as critical as the BMS itself. Your BMS might happily handle 100A continuous, but if your cables are undersized they'll be doing their best impression of a toaster element before you notice.

For a dual 200Ah setup I'd recommend nothing smaller than 35mm² between batteries and busbar, and keep those runs short. Voltage drop is the silent efficiency killer nobody talks about until their inverter starts throwing low-voltage alarms.

Also — fuse placement matters. Fuse as close to the positive terminal as physically possible. Not "near the battery box." Not "roughly nearby." Right there.

@BatteryPaula solid setup choice. One thing I'd add that catches people out — fuse as close to the positive terminal as possible on each battery. Not at the load end, not halfway along the cable. Right at the source.

Learned this the hard way on my boat build. Cable between battery and fuse is unprotected, and that's where fires start.

With two 200Ah in parallel you're also looking at some serious fault current potential. I'd go no smaller than a 125A ANL fuse per battery before they join at the busbar.

Victron has a decent wiring guide on their site — worth bookmarking alongside the Fogstar docs.

@BatteryPaula snap on the shepherd's hut setup — I've got the same Fogstar Drifts and went through a similar learning curve.

One thing nobody mentioned yet: when you're connecting two 12v batteries in parallel, make sure your cable runs are equal length between each battery and the busbar. Unequal lengths mean unequal resistance, which means one battery ends up doing more work than the other and they age unevenly.

Also worth checking — does your BMS support parallel configurations explicitly? The Drift's built-in BMS is fine, but it's worth reading Fogstar's docs on whether they recommend any balancing leads between units.

How long are you planning to run the hut off-grid at a stretch? That'll affect whether 400Ah combined is actually enough for your use case.
