Been meaning to jump on this one. I've got quite a bit of time on my hands in the motorhome during winter, so I've built up a decent list of stuff worth watching.

Grand Designs is obvious, but there's some cracking off-grid builds in there if you dig through the back catalogue. The Cotswolds eco-house episode still holds up.

More niche but absolutely worth your time: The Off Grid Life on YouTube. Two blokes converting a Scottish bothy with proper attention to detail on the electrical side — no cutting corners with dodgy setups. Really helped me understand load management when I was planning my cabin build.

Homestead Rescue can be a bit dramatic (American TV, innit), but they genuinely solve real problems. Some of their battery and water solutions are solid, even if the production value is a bit much.

I've also spent embarrassing amounts of time watching random DIY off-grid builds on various channels. Not always polished, but you see the honest mistakes and actual troubleshooting, which honestly teaches you more than the glossy stuff.

The documentary Our Planet isn't off-grid specific, but it's made me think differently about energy consumption and why this lifestyle matters beyond just saving money.

What about everyone else — are you lot watching anything that's actually influenced your setup? Or is it mostly background entertainment while you're tinkering with Victron configs?

Grand Designs is alright but honestly half the builds are grid-connected anyway, so limited relevance to actual off-grid living. The architecture porn gets old fast when you're sat in a motorhome dealing with real power management issues.

Off Grid with Graham Bell is the one worth your time – proper technical detail on systems that actually work, not just pretty homes that cost £2m. He goes into battery sizing, inverter specs, the lot.

If you want something lighter, It's Not Rocket Science has decent segments on renewable energy without being patronising. The YouTube channels are actually better though – I've learned more from proper technical breakdowns than any TV programme.

What's your power setup in the van? Depending on your battery capacity, you might find some of the smaller channels discussing LiFePO₄ versus lithium more useful than any documentary. Winter's the real test for any system anyway.

@Liam1990 makes a fair point, though I've found the battery storage episodes useful just for seeing how different systems handle load management. Even if they're grid-tied, you can nick ideas about wiring layouts and equipment choices.

What I'm actually after are documentaries about people living genuinely off-grid long-term, not just the renovation porn. Anyone watched anything focused on the nitty-gritty of winter power management? I'm struggling through December right now and curious how others handle the shortened daylight hours without just throwing money at massive battery banks.

Have a decent solar setup but the grey British skies are doing a number on my charging cycles. Wondering if there's anything that actually addresses seasonal constraints rather than just showing off fancy Victron systems in summer.

@Liam1990 fair point about Grid Designs though I'd argue some of the newer series episodes with Monolithic domes and earth ships are worth a watch purely for the passive design side of things. Even if they're grid-connected, understanding thermal mass and orientation pays dividends when you're sizing a smaller system.

Has anyone watched the rewilding documentaries? There's quite a few on iPlayer about people setting up smallholdings and cabins. Less polished than Grand Designs but more realistic about the actual graft involved.

Also been watching some of the older Grand Designs episodes where Kevin McCloud visits off-grid builds in Scotland and Wales — might be worth hunting those down if you haven't seen them.

What else is on your list, @SamBennett? I'm looking for recommendations that actually focus on energy independence rather than just pretty buildings.

@Liam1990's got a point, though I've found the odd episode useful for watching how people plan electrical layouts, even if the final build's on mains. The real gold is in specialist stuff—This Old House has some cracking deep-dives into battery and solar integration, and there's a decent YouTube channel called Fully Off Grid that actually knows what they're on about with system sizing.

For pure entertainment value though, Homestead Rescue can be decent if you ignore the drama and focus on what they're actually doing—water systems, food preservation, that sort of thing. Nothing groundbreaking but it's realistic about the graft involved.

Honestly, I've learned more from individual YouTube channel builds than any mainstream telly. Folk doing single-room solar setups or documenting their battery failures (especially the failures—that's where you learn) are way more useful than watching a £2m Grand Design with unlimited budget and a team of electricians.

What's your setup currently, @SamBennett? Motorhome power needs are quite different from stationary off-grid work.

Have you lot checked out Homestead Rescue? Bit American-focused, but they actually get into the nitty-gritty of power systems and water management rather than just showing off pretty buildings. The solar setups they spec out are usually solid, even if the timescales are wildly optimistic.

I've also found the older Off Grid Living series on various streaming platforms decent for seeing how systems perform over actual seasons. Not as polished as Grand Designs, but you get a proper sense of what works and what doesn't when you're properly isolated.

Fair warning though — most of these shows gloss over the boring bits. Nobody wants to watch someone troubleshooting inverter settings for 20 minutes, but that's where the real learning happens. I've got more useful ideas from scrolling through Victron case studies and actual installer blogs than I have from telly.

What's your power setup in the motorhome? Might be more useful to focus on content that actually matches what you're running.

@Mark1978's spot on about Homestead Rescue — the power systems stuff is genuinely useful, even if the rest is a bit dramatised. What I found most valuable was watching them troubleshoot existing setups that had gone pear-shaped.

Worth adding The Ebbs & Flows to the list if you haven't seen it. Follows a couple building a completely off-grid roundhouse in Scotland. Less entertainment, more actual problem-solving — they document their battery bank sizing, inverter selection, the whole lot. Bit slow-paced but dead practical.

Also had good results with some of the smaller YouTube channels rather than broadcast telly. Low Tech Magazine does occasional video content that's refreshingly technical without being dumbed down. And if you're willing to go niche, there are some excellent single-topic documentaries about renewable energy infrastructure.

The problem with most mainstream stuff is they gloss over the winter generation issues or pretend a tiny solar array does more than it actually does. Gran Designs is guilty of that — beautiful aesthetics, questionable electrical planning.

Has anyone mentioned Rewild the Planet yet? Watched a few episodes last year and there's some decent stuff on small-scale renewable setups, though admittedly it's more about the environmental angle than the technical side.

@Mark1978's right about Homestead Rescue being useful for the practical bits — I caught an episode where they sorted out a proper mess of a battery bank installation, which actually made me reconsider my own setup on the boat.

What about Off Grid with Paul Rose? It's more recent and genuinely technical. He visits different systems and actually asks proper questions about voltage drop, battery chemistry, that sort of thing. Not pure entertainment, but perfect for winter watching when you've got time to absorb the details.

Curious though — are people looking for entertainment value or genuine learning material? Because that changes what I'd recommend. If it's the latter, some of the YouTube channels (especially the ones diving into Victron systems) are probably more useful than telly docs, but I get that it's nicer to watch on a proper screen after a long day.

@Mark1978's right about Homestead Rescue — the power systems commentary is solid, though you've got to wade through a lot of American homesteading ideology to get there. Worth it for the battery sizing discussions alone.

What I've found more useful, honestly, is Off Grid Living UK on YouTube rather than telly. Proper technical content without the drama editing, and you get actual schematics. Been running a static caravan setup for three years now, and watching someone properly size a battery bank before installing it beats most documentaries.

Build Back Better had some decent off-grid segments too, though it's more about renovation than energy systems specifically.

The real value in these shows isn't always what they're teaching intentionally — it's spotting what they've got wrong. Watch how they route cables, size inverters, manage battery discharge cycles. You'll learn more from their mistakes than their successes, especially if you're planning similar on a narrowboat or caravan. I've definitely caught myself about to make the same wiring errors I've seen on screen.

If you're after genuine technical depth, honestly, the forum here and YouTube

Has anyone watched Off Grid with Kate Humble? Worth a look if you haven't caught it — she actually lives the lifestyle rather than just visiting, which makes a difference. The solar and battery setups are fairly realistic too, not glossed over like some programmes.

I'd also flag Building Off the Grid if you can track it down. Not all seasons are equally useful, but there are some solid episodes on power management and storage. Bit American-focused though, so less directly relevant than the UK stuff.

@SolarJunkie — fair point on Homestead Rescue. I find myself skipping chunks of it as well, but their approach to backup systems is worth stealing ideas from.

Honestly though, I've found more practical stuff by just watching YouTube channels of people with actual systems — Fully Charged, for instance. Less entertainment value but more applicable to what we're actually dealing with in the UK. Climate and grid access are just completely different to what you see on telly.

What sort of system are you running in the motorhome, @SamBennett? Might recommend something more tailored if I knew what you're interested

Off Grid with Kate Humble is brilliant for actual practical stuff. She's not just visiting for telly, she's actually dealing with the day-to-day grind of it. Watched most of it while setting up my garden office setup and picked up some decent ideas about battery management and water systems. Real, not dramatised.

Kate Humble's the real deal — actually lives it rather than just narrating someone else's misery for ratings. Though fair warning, watching her battery setup makes mine look like I'm running a narrowboat off a car battery and determination.
